Hosea 9:10
I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness; I saw your fathers as the firstripe in the fig tree at her first time: but they went to Baal-peor, and separated themselves unto that shame; and their abominations were according as they loved.
At first God looked upon Israel with delight as something precious and full of promise, as welcome as grapes discovered unexpectedly in a barren wilderness and as the early ripe fruit of a fig tree in its first bearing season. That favor made their later course the more grievous, for they went to Baal-peor and deliberately joined themselves to shameful idolatry. In doing so they became as abominable as the objects of their affection, taking on the vileness of the idols they loved. The worship of Baal-peor was not a passing fault but a deep inward corruption by which they cast away the uplifting and ennobling principles that build noble character.
