Isaiah Mourns Over the Ruined Vineyardby emmanuel_higgins

Isaiah 1:4

Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward.

The verse exposes the true spiritual condition of God's people as a sinful nation laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers and corrupting children who have forsaken the Lord, provoked the Holy One of Israel to anger, and gone away backward. It pictures them weighed down and burdened by wrongdoing, descended from evildoers and acting corruptly, having abandoned God, rebelled against Him, and turned away from Him. Those so described are ancient Israel, specifically Judah, His once-favored people. It belongs to a contrast in which even animals recognize their owner, while God's people fail to know or consider their Creator despite all He has done for them. The verses that follow portray their condition as sickness and wounds throughout the nation.

It describes people who profess to serve God and claim to be righteous while transgressing His law and walking in forbidden paths, whose religious profession and ceremonies do not amount to the obedience God requires. It also delineates the condition of the men driven from the temple courts, showing how the Lord regards such claimants who transgress His holy law while claiming righteousness. It gives the reason for their chastisement and destruction despite their call to hold universal dominion under the seed of David. It shows the depth of their sin and their need for a Saviour, with their corruption coming through persistent wrongdoing.

It calls people with reasoning faculties to examine their actions from God's perspective and recognize that they have resisted His will and way. It is applied as a personal warning to a man who knows the truth but is rebelling against God and risking his wife's and children's faith, urging him to repent, humble himself, and turn from breaking God's law. Its indictment is applied as a warning to the Battle Creek church against rebellion, resistance to God, and defiance of His dealings, urging it to consider its course and repent.
