Isaiah Mourns Over the Ruined Vineyardby emmanuel_higgins

Isaiah 1:8

And the daughter of Zion is left as a cottage in a vineyard, as a lodge in a garden of cucumbers, as a besieged city.

The daughter of Zion is Judah and Jerusalem, the once-favored people called to hold universal dominion with the scepter given to the seed of David. She is left as a cottage in a vineyard, as a lodge in a garden of cucumbers, as a besieged city, a small, isolated, wasted and solitary shelter standing amid ruin. Around her the country lies desolate, the cities are burned, and the land is devoured by strangers. The image belongs to utter spiritual desolation, a remnant hut left alone after harvest and a city cut off under siege.

This condition belongs to a people who profess to serve God while walking in forbidden paths. It comes through rebellion against the Lord, iniquity, forsaking Him, and going backward. Profession without obedience leaves them solitary and wasted rather than protected and fruitful.

The verse gives the reason for their chastisement and presents them as a people to be utterly destroyed for their iniquities. The same condition delineates those Christ drove out of the temple courts. In this it shows how the Lord regards those who claim to be righteous while transgressing His holy law.
