Isaiah 10:33
Behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, shall lop the bough with terror: and the high ones of stature shall be hewn down, and the haughty shall be humbled. Behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, shall lop the bough with terror: and the high ones of stature shall be hewn down, and the haughty shall be humbled.
Isaiah 10:33 stands in the first division of the book, chapters 1 to 39, which consists of prophecies and historical accounts delivered while Isaiah was actively engaged in public affairs as God's messenger to rulers and people, first issued as separate prophecies at different times and on different occasions and afterward gathered into one collection. Within that division it belongs to a prophecy against Assyria. It forms part of a historical account of an Assyrian invasion of Judah.
That account gives no clear identification of the person who carried out the deeds it records. The chapter to which the verse belongs portrays strife, war, and wickedness, standing in contrast with the rest, peace, and righteousness of Christ's kingdom presented in Isaiah 11. The verse itself shows the Lord bringing down the proud and powerful.
The section containing it uses reproofs of sin in Isaiah's time to point to similar conditions in the last days, with its great deliverance coming at Christ's coming. In that wider fulfillment the verse describes the great and terrible day of the Lord, called the day of Midian in allusion to Gideon's famous battle.
