Isaiah 10:4
Without me they shall bow down under the prisoners, and they shall fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still. Without me they shall bow down under the prisoners, and they shall fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
The verse pronounces divine judgment on lawmakers and judges who issue unrighteous decrees, who turn the needy aside from justice, who take away the right of the poor, who make widows their prey, and who rob the fatherless. Apart from God they have no other portion left but to bow down under the prisoners and to fall under the slain, sinking among captives and the dead. Even after that fall His anger is not turned away, but His hand remains stretched out still against them.
It presses the searching questions of what such oppressors will do in the day of visitation and punishment, when desolation and ruin come from far, to whom they will flee for help, and where they will leave their glory and honor. In this it sets forth the condition of the present world, where such oppression prevails. That worldly condition stands in contrast to God's promise to dwell with him who is contrite and humble in spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble and the heart of the contrite, to heal, to lead, and to restore comforts to them.
