Isaiah 11:10
And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious. And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious.
The root of Jesse is Christ, the Messiah, the promised Seed, the Root of Jesse and of David, Prince Immanuel. He stands as an ensign, a signal, a standard and a rallying point that guides those seeking the light of truth. He is pictured as the bloodstained banner of Prince Immanuel beneath which people gather and by which they are drawn to him. To him the Gentiles seek, which means they trust in him, and he rises to reign over the Gentiles. His rest shall be glorious.
As the promised Seed he brings God's deliverance to Zion. The infant presented in the temple was this promised One, the Desire of all nations, the hope of fallen humanity, whose work brings salvation to the world. The verse shows the whole world embraced in the great plan of redemption. This is set against the darkness of the Gentile world caused by the Jewish nation's neglect to bear fruit in obedience and good works, and it reveals God's promise through Scripture and gives grounds for hope. The Lord sets His hand the second time to recover the remnant of His people left from Assyria, Egypt, Pathros, Cush, Elam, Shinar, Hamath, and the islands of the sea. He sets up an ensign for the nations to assemble the outcasts of Israel and gather the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth and from many lands.
Joined with the promise that the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord, the verse shows God's truth is to be made known through human agents working with Christ, even amid war, famine, pestilence, and other calamities. Its prophecy of spiritual awakening amid darkness is fulfilled in mission stations reaching heathen lands, which stand as signs leading Gentiles toward truth, and their response in seeking the root fulfills the prophecy. Applied to the present day, the verse calls God's people to carry the glad tidings of salvation to those who have not heard them. It calls them to plant the standard of truth where it has not been proclaimed, and to continue carrying the final warning to the world.
