Isaiah 12:6

Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion: for great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee.

Cry out and shout with joy as one dwelling in Zion, for the Holy One of Israel is great and present in the midst, and this is the confidence and gladness of those who have received His salvation and comfort. It is the closing call of the song sung in that day, answering anger turned away, comfort given, salvation received, trust without fear, the Lord as strength and song, joy drawn from the wells of salvation, and excellent deeds to be praised and proclaimed with His exalted name. It belongs to the day when the Lord sets His hand the second time to recover the remnant of His people and gather the outcasts of Israel and the dispersed of Judah, with His presence accompanying His scattered people and His glory revealed as Jerusalem and its worship are restored. It is instruction to be practiced as the royal path cast up for the ransomed to walk in, seeing the Saviour as refuge and shield to defend from Satan, and a comforting word giving peace and joy as the Lord draws near to the heart. Its truth is to be personally felt as a living reality bringing help and blessing even to the sick and suffering, giving strength for God's work instead of discouragement, living reliance on the Redeemer, complete triumph over sin by faith, and power to help others and advance His work.

Meaning and Historical Setting

The inhabitant of Zion is summoned to cry out and shout aloud with joy because the Holy One of Israel is great and present in the midst. The outcry expresses the joy and confidence of a people who have received His salvation and comfort, and who praise Him for being among them. His presence accompanies the gathering of His scattered people and their praise for His salvation, and His deeds with His exalted name are to be declared throughout the earth.

The call stands as the closing cry of the song to be sung in that day, uttered by those dwelling in Zion in rejoicing praise for anger turned away and comfort given. It answers salvation received and trusted without fear, the Lord found as strength and song and salvation, and joy drawn like water from the wells of salvation. It answers also praise offered to the Lord, calling upon His name, declaring His doings among the people, making mention that His name is exalted, and singing of the excellent things He has done that are to be made known in all the earth.

In Hezekiah's time the assurance that the Holy One of Israel was present among Judah gave the people reason to cry out and rejoice as they prepared to resist the Assyrians. In Judah's danger from Assyria the message assured the people that God was with them. Hezekiah drew courage from it as he prepared to resist the enemy, trusting God to help Judah and to fight for them.

Prophecy and Future Fulfillment

The shout of joy belongs to that day when the Lord sets His hand the second time to recover the remnant of His people and to gather the outcasts of Israel and the dispersed of Judah. In that day His anger is turned away and He gives comfort, He becomes salvation to be trusted without fear, He is found as strength and song, water is drawn with joy from the wells of salvation, His doings are declared among the people and His name is exalted. His presence accompanies the gathering of His scattered people and their praise for His salvation, and His deeds and exalted name are to be declared throughout the earth.

The call to rejoice is assurance to Jerusalem's afflicted people of protection and strength as the city and its worship are restored. The greatness of the Holy One of Israel in their midst means that God is present among His people. His glory among them will be revealed throughout the earth.

The crying out and shouting in praise means praising the Lord, calling upon His name, declaring His doings among the people, making mention that His name is exalted, and singing that He has done excellent things to be made known in all the earth. It will be fulfilled to God's people just as soon as they lay off the burdens God has not placed on them. That fulfillment comes just as soon as they obtain the robe of Christ's righteousness, answer Christ's prayer, and serve the Lord with all humility.

Comfort and Daily Application

The call to shout with joy is instruction to be practiced, belonging to the song of praise and trust and joy in salvation. It sets before believers the royal path cast up for the ransomed to walk in, a better and safer way that has no equal. To walk in it is to see the Saviour as refuge and as shield on the right hand, defending from the arrows of Satan.

The word gives peace and joy in God's love as the Lord draws near and comforts the heart. It shines as a precious promise in the Word, to be prayed over, looked at, lingered over, eaten and digested for encouragement and refreshment and light in the Lord, until faint-heartedness passes away. It is the joyful response of those whose anger has been turned away and who have received salvation and comfort, crying out and shouting as inhabitants of Zion because the Holy One of Israel is great in their midst, praising the Lord, calling upon His name, declaring His doings among the people, exalting His name, and singing of His excellent works made known in all the earth.

Its truth completes the assurance that God is salvation, to be trusted without fear as strength and song and salvation, giving joy in drawing water from the wells of salvation, with praise, calling upon His name, declaring His doings, exalting His name, and singing for His excellent things known in all the earth. That truth is to become a living reality personally felt, bringing help and blessing even to the sick and suffering, giving strength to speak it, renewed courage, and abiding blessing. It means comfort and joy and strength to do God's work instead of sadness and discouragement, through living reliance on the Redeemer who gave His life so that people need not perish but have everlasting life. By living faith believers draw upon God's strength and power for complete triumph over Satan and sin, draw nearer to God with increased faith and firm reliance on His help, and become a help and blessing to others while advancing His work without delay against Satan's deceptions.
