Isaiah 14:16

They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;

The verse pictures Satan after his overthrow, with those who see him looking closely upon him and considering him in astonishment that one brought so low could be the one who caused the earth to tremble and shook kingdoms. The one thus exposed is Lucifer, son of the morning, who fell from heaven for weakening the nations after saying in his heart that he would ascend into heaven, exalt his throne above the stars of God, and be like the Most High. He is to be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit, where this narrow looking and considering takes place.

For six thousand years his rebellion brought turmoil to the earth, made it desolate, destroyed its cities, and oppressed God's people. His prison-house held God's people, but Christ broke his bonds and set them free. His self-exaltation above all that is called God is the principle acted out by the man of sin, whose revelation is being made as the great controversy grows stronger near the close of this earth's history, requiring Christians to show their colors on the Lord's side.
