Isaiah 14:23

I will also make it a possession for the bittern, and pools of water: and I will sweep it with the besom of destruction, saith the LORD of hosts.

The verse is a sentence of divine retribution upon Babylon, declaring that its power and glory will come to an end when the Lord completely sweeps it away in judgment. Its sweeping is utter and complete, leaving the city destroyed and desolate.

Babylon will be left without human habitation, its ruins occupied by wild creatures and the bittern. Pools of water will form upon its site, leaving it waterlogged and unfit for dwelling. This desolation is lasting, for Babylon is to remain uninhabited and accursed.

The same sweeping destruction foreshadows coming judgments in which ungodly cities will be ruined. Present calamities striking buildings and parts of cities warn of what will come upon the whole earth. The same overwhelming destruction awaits those who resist the Spirit of God after probation ends, when it will be too late to make wrongs right. Therefore people should put on the whole armor and prepare to resist evil while help is still offered.
