Isaiah 14:4
That thou shalt take up this proverb against the king of Babylon, and say, How hath the oppressor ceased! the golden city ceased! That thou shalt take up this proverb against the king of Babylon, and say, How hath the oppressor ceased! the golden city ceased!
The golden city is Babylon in its splendor, the chief glory of Nebuchadnezzar's kingdom and a wonder of the world. That beauty and fame fed the king's pride and put him in danger of turning away from humility. In this proverb the king of Babylon represents Satan.
The proverb celebrates the oppressor's defeat, when the Lord breaks his power and ends his rule and his unrestrained persecution of the nations. It is to be taken up when the Lord gives His people rest from sorrow and trouble and hard forced service. That rest makes the end of captivity and oppressive rule a cause for rejoicing.
