The King of Babylon Lies Fallen Below the Zigguratby emmanuel_higgins

Isaiah 14:5

The LORD hath broken the staff of the wicked, and the sceptre of the rulers.

The line stands in the taunt-song against the king of Babylon, and that king stands for Satan himself. The shattering of staff and sceptre is the Lord's breaking of the power by which wicked rulers oppress His people and persecute the nations. For Satan this is accomplished in his binding captivity, which brings his rule and tyranny and persecution to an end. With the oppressor thus made to cease, God's people are given rest and break forth in rejoicing and gladness.
