Isaiah 16:5
And in mercy shall the throne be established: and he shall sit upon it in truth in the tabernacle of David, judging, and seeking judgment, and hasting righteousness. And in mercy shall the throne be established: and he shall sit upon it in truth in the tabernacle of David, judging, and seeking judgment, and hasting righteousness.
The verse stands in the burden or prophecy against Moab, which is one of the nations addressed in that part of Isaiah, and Moab was one of the oppressors of Judah. It belongs to the first division of Isaiah, chapters 1 to 39, which is made up of separate and distinct prophecies published at different times and on different occasions. That first division was given while Isaiah was actively mingling in the public concerns of the rulers and the people as God's messenger to the nation. This is unlike chapters 40 to 66, which belong to his later years apart from active exertion and are wholly occupied with the future. Those later chapters console with deliverance from the predicted Babylonian captivity by a monarch named as sent by Jehovah, and connect that deliverance with deliverance from sin and error through the Messiah and with the glory of the spiritual kingdom of God and its exalted Founder.
The verse concerns the work of Jesus Christ and the kingdom of glory to come. The throne established in mercy, with one sitting upon it in truth in the tabernacle of David, means that Christ commences His reign on the earth in the place where David's throne was. He sits there as the righteous Branch and King who executes judgment and justice, judging and seeking judgment and hasting righteousness. This fulfills the promise that God would give Him the throne of His father David to reign over Jacob forever with a kingdom without end.
