Isaiah 2:10

Enter into the rock, and hide thee in the dust, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty.

Isaiah 2:10 opens a prophecy about the day of the Lord of hosts that must be studied carefully now before it is too late, in order to become certain about what is coming and to warn others before the judgments fall. It commands proud people to enter into the rock and hide in the dust for fear of the Lord and for the glory of His majesty. In terror they will seek shelter in the holes of the rocks and the caves of the earth, and in the clefts and tops of the ragged rocks, when He rises to judge and to shake the earth terribly.

In that day human pride will be brought low, so that the lofty looks of man shall be humbled and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down and the Lord alone shall be exalted. For the day of the Lord of hosts shall come upon every one that is proud and lofty and lifted up to bring him low. It shall come upon the cedars of Lebanon and the oaks of Bashan, upon high mountains and lifted hills, upon every high tower and fenced wall, upon the ships of Tarshish and pleasant pictures, and all human loftiness shall be bowed down.

The idols shall be utterly abolished as people abandon them, casting their idols of silver and of gold made for worship to the moles and to the bats. People are taught to cease from man whose breath is in his nostrils, for he is not to be accounted of, looking not to men but to God. The invitation and warning is directed especially to those who have had great light yet have not followed the light but have chosen unbelief until they cannot distinguish light from the darkness of error. It also falls upon those who have defied God's commandments, who will be overcome with fear.

What the passage outlines will certainly come to pass amid increasing war and bloodshed and confusion as nations seek to outdo one another for possession. At the same time the warfare between good and evil constantly intensifies between the army carrying out Satan's planning and the army upholding God's will, in preparation for the last great battle. The verse therefore calls for response now: to make God's Word the earnest study, to come to it and obey Him with heart and soul. God's people are to be separate and holy, and all inhabitants should tremble because the coming day is near. They are to turn to God with the whole heart with fasting and weeping and mourning, with broken hearts rather than outward display, because He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness.
