And upon all the high mountains, and upon all the hills that are lifted up,
The day of the Lord of hosts shall come in judgment upon all the high mountains and upon all the hills that are lifted up to bring them low, together with every proud and lofty person and thing, including the high cedars of Lebanon and the oaks of Bashan, every high tower and fenced wall, the ships of Tarshish and pleasant pictures. Its purpose is the humbling of human loftiness and haughtiness, so that the lofty looks of man shall be humbled, the loftiness of men shall be bowed down and made low, and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day. The weight of the passages holds that this humbling reaches people of every rank, for kings and nobles as well as the rich and the poor will bow when God's withering plagues fall.
In that day idols shall be utterly abolished, and men shall cast away their idols of silver and gold to the moles and to the bats. In terror they shall go into the holes of the rocks and into the caves of the earth, for fear of the Lord and for the glory of His majesty, when He arises to shake terribly the earth. This proves that man, whose breath is in his nostrils, is not to be trusted.
The great day foretold is at hand, even at the door, and what is outlined will certainly come to pass upon the world, so it is to be studied carefully and understood before it is too late as divine certainty. Its fulfillment comes amid increasing warfare between good and evil preparing for the last great battle, with increasing war and bloodshed and confusion of nations seeking to outdo one another for possession. Those who have had great light yet choose unbelief are invited to hide for fear of the Lord and for the glory of His majesty before that day comes.
The verse serves as a warning of judgments and calamities to come and a call to turn to the Lord with all the heart. The warning is sent in the last days not to extinguish but to make an obedient, loyal, separate and holy people who show forth His praises and call attention to the hand that sustains the world.
