The verse describes the day of the Lord of hosts, the day of God's vengeance and majesty and the great judgment day. In that day every one that is proud and lifted up is visited, and human loftiness, lofty looks and haughtiness are humbled, bowed down and made low. The Lord alone is exalted, and the idols He shall utterly abolish and completely do away and destroy. When He acts in His majesty, the abolishing of idols is part of humbling human pride and exalting Himself alone.
In that day a man shall cast away his idols of silver and his idols of gold, which they made each one for himself to worship. They are cast to the moles and to the bats as worthless things no longer able to save. For fear of the Lord and for the glory of His majesty, when He ariseth to shake terribly the earth, men shall flee and go into the holes of the rocks and the caves of the earth to hide. They shall go into the clefts of the rocks and the tops of the ragged rocks for fear of the Lord and for the glory of His majesty.
Those unprepared to meet their Lord in peace are filled with consternation, with faint hands, melting hearts and fear. This is because the day of the Lord is at hand as destruction from the Almighty. The verse warns those who have had great light yet have chosen unbelief, calling them to enter into the rock and hide for fear of the Lord and for the glory of His majesty. It belongs to the constantly increasing warfare between good and evil preparing for the last great battle, and it will certainly come to pass in a time of increasing war and bloodshed and confusion of nations as each seeks advantage in possession.
In that hiding and casting away of idols men learn to cease from man, whose breath is in his nostrils. In these last days the Lord will work for all who walk in obedience to His will maintaining loyalty uncorrupted. For He has formed a separate and holy people to show forth His praises and bear testimony to the hand that sustains the world, and His warnings are sent not to extinguish them but to lift up the banner to be borne. The verse is to be studied carefully as divine certainty of what is coming upon the world.
