Isaiah 20:5

And they shall be afraid and ashamed of Ethiopia their expectation, and of Egypt their glory.

Isaiah 20:5 belongs to the first part of Isaiah, which gathers prophecies and historical accounts from the period of Isaiah's active public ministry that were given on different occasions and later collected together. It stands among the prophecies of chapters 20, 21, and 22 concerning Assyria, the wilderness of the South, Idumea, and Israel. It describes how those who relied on Ethiopia for help and support and looked to Egypt as their glory and pride would become frightened and disgraced when those powers failed them. Egypt and Ethiopia were trusted as protection and sources of pride, but Sargon's invasion and conquest is the historical occasion that made those who relied on them afraid and ashamed. The verse concerns Egypt and its ally Ethiopia as objects of fear and shame. The actions of Esar-haddon and Ashur-bani-pal contributed to a partial fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecies concerning Egypt.
