For thus hath the Lord said unto me, Go, set a watchman, let him declare what he seeth.
The Lord Himself appoints the watchman and sends him out to report faithfully what he observes. That watchman stands for Christ's faithful ministers positioned on the battlements of the church. His task is to scatter the precious seed of truth broadly, with prayer and deep concern for others, that they may perceive the light and rejoice in it. At the same time he is to warn and plead earnestly in a time marked by unrest, apostasy, and blasphemy.
The work draws heavily on mind and heart, and unrelieved strain can exhaust the worker before his time. To serve effectively he must receive strength and be continually supplied with fresh, life-giving truths from God's word.
