Isaiah 22:14

And it was revealed in mine ears by the LORD of hosts, Surely this iniquity shall not be purged from you till ye die, saith the Lord GOD of hosts.

The chapter containing this declaration is directed against Jerusalem, in contrast to the surrounding prophecies directed against foreign nations. Within that setting the declaration stands in a prophecy concerning Israel, placed among prophecies concerning Assyria and the wilderness of the South and Idumea. It is addressed to a people whom God called to mourn and humble themselves and repent and control appetite, but who instead gave themselves to feasting and pleasure and flesh-eating and wine-drinking.

Because they refused to heed God and repent, their iniquity shall not be purged from them till they die, and this is a warning of judgment for sin. Their eating of flesh and drinking of wine when called to self-control pictures a present condition in which indulgence clouds the mind and hinders spiritual discernment. The warning applies to the time when the judgment is deciding who is worthy, urging watchfulness and prayer and avoidance of excess.
