Isaiah 23:2

Be still, ye inhabitants of the isle; thou whom the merchants of Zidon, that pass over the sea, have replenished.

Isaiah 23:2 belongs to the burden of Tyre within the section of Isaiah directed mainly against foreign nations, declaring God's judgments upon that city. It forms part of the prophecy concerning Tyre's destruction and its fall from commercial greatness, foretelling the city's destruction by Nebuchadnezzar. Tyre was an ancient Phoenician commercial city whose later site stood on an island off the mainland. The inhabitants of the isle were connected with the merchants of Zidon that pass over the sea, who had supplied and replenished them in trade. Its fulfillment included Tyre's citizens escaping by sea with most of their possessions while the land siege continued, though they found no lasting rest in their places of refuge.
