Isaiah 23:9

The LORD of hosts hath purposed it, to stain the pride of all glory, and to bring into contempt all the honourable of the earth.

The verse belongs to the prophecy concerning Tyre, to the burden of Tyre that presents God's judgments upon that city. In Tyre's downfall it declares the LORD of hosts' purpose to stain the pride of all glory and to bring the honourable of the earth into contempt, humbling human pride and splendor and glorious honor. Standing within Isaiah 22 to 24, it shows the vision reaching beyond its own nation and its own time to all nations and all times. The prophecy foretold Tyre's destruction by the Chaldeans, by Babylon under Nebuchadnezzar when Tyre was the commercial metropolis of the world, and that prediction was fulfilled, the Lord bringing Tyre's glory and honor down to contempt and shame through Babylon. It also prophesied a later destruction by Alexander, when its stones and timber and dust were thrown into the sea to make a bridge to New Tyre, leaving it a scraped rock where fishers dry their nets.
