Isaiah 24:2
And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the taker of usury, so with the giver of usury to him.
The verse belongs to the prophecy of the great final judgment day, the revelation of the closing scenes of world history which the Bible alone shows correctly. In that vision the Lord makes the earth empty and waste, turns it upside down, brings it to ruin, and scatters abroad its inhabitants. The surrounding passage in Isaiah 24:1-10, also given as Isaiah 24:1-8, describes this wasted earth and its ended joy. That desolation comes because its inhabitants have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, and broken the everlasting covenant. Therefore the curse devours the earth, those dwelling in it are left desolate and suffer the consequences of their transgression, and human rejoicing with mirth and music and joy is ended.
Within that cleansing judgment calamity falls on every level of society alike without regard to status, position, economic role, or relationship, so no rank gives exemption or sparing. People share the same fate with priest, servant with master, maid with mistress, buyer with seller, lender with borrower, and taker of usury with giver of usury to him. All social classes are placed within that judgment, leveled together as the world is laid waste. These coming events are already casting their shadows before them, and the sound of their approach causes the earth to tremble and men's hearts to fail for fear.
