Isaiah 26:7

The way of the just is uprightness: thou, most upright, dost weigh the path of the just.

The path of those made right with God is straight and upright, and He who is Himself perfectly straight and upright makes that path level and guides their steps. This belongs to the song of the faithful people who trust in the Lord forever as He saves them, casts down the proud city to the dust for the poor and needy to tread upon, and whom they wait for in His judgments with longing for His name. He looks upon their whole course with full knowledge, weighing conduct and character and actions, even in worship and in dealings with others. His weighing reaches past outward deeds to every motive, purpose, and secret thought of the heart. Those who block His saving work or cling to self and indifference are placed against His unchanging law and found lacking, so to stand requires full surrender to know and do His will in purity and unselfishness, trusting Him to direct what is right and to open grace for pardon.

Song Setting and Wording

The verse belongs to the song to be sung in the land of Judah in that day by the righteous nation that keeps the truth as it enters the strong city where God appoints salvation for walls and bulwarks. It is sung by those who trust in the Lord Jehovah for everlasting strength and who see Him bring down the lofty city to the ground and to the dust to be trodden by the feet of the poor and needy. In that same song His people wait for Him in the way of His judgments with desire for His name and remembrance.

The way of the just is uprightness, and the just walk in an upright way. The most upright one is God, who is perfectly upright. To weigh the path of the just means to keep it level and to direct their course.

God Examines Heart Fully

The Most Upright weighs the path of the just by examining and measuring their course, conduct, character, and actions. He judges their ways with complete knowledge, seeing every act clearly. Their motives and conduct are measured by His righteous judgment.

That examination includes conduct in meetings and dealings with others. No part of outward life is outside the weighing, for He sees every act clearly in those settings as well.

His judgment reaches beyond outward conduct to motives, purposes, and thoughts. He reads every purpose and thought of the heart. This includes thoughts hidden from others and hidden purposes. He reads every motive in the depths of the heart and every secret in the recesses of the soul, with motives and conduct measured by His righteous judgment.

Warning Sanctification and Trust

God, who is perfectly upright, weighs the conduct and path of the just, and His judgment reaches beyond outward actions to the motives and purposes behind them. He weighs the characters, actions, and motives of men, reading every motive in the heart and every purpose and every thought of the heart. Those whose deeds obstruct and hedge up the way of the work of salvation are weighed in the balances and found wanting. Although human ways may look clean in human eyes, years of careless indifference, self-seeking, and struggle against God's will and way are placed in the balances against the perfect changeless law of God demanding obedience. Sin, disobedience, and departure from righteousness lie in the other scale, ending in being found wanting unless the life meets the test.

Under that divine examination, in which God examines and measures the life course of the righteous, reading every motive in the depths of the heart and every secret in the recesses of the soul, sanctification is unreserved surrender to God to know and do His will. It is being heavenly minded, pure, unselfish, without spot or blemish. It is known by its fruits.

The weighing of the path of the just is linked to the removal of sins through the free access of grace, which prepares people to receive the blessing of pardon. The just walk in an upright way, and God, who is perfectly upright, weighs and directs their path. In prayer for healing this supports trusting God to guide the course of the just and to act according to what is right, even when the outcome is left to Him.
