Isaiah 27:10
Yet the defenced city shall be desolate, and the habitation forsaken, and left like a wilderness: there shall the calf feed, and there shall he lie down, and consume the branches thereof. Yet the defenced city shall be desolate, and the habitation forsaken, and left like a wilderness: there shall the calf feed, and there shall he lie down, and consume the branches thereof.
The verse stands in the first division of Isaiah, chapters 1 to 39, and not in the second division, chapters 40 to 66. That first division holds the prophecies and historical accounts belonging to Isaiah's years of active public work mingling in the concerns of rulers and people as God's messenger to the nation. Those messages were given as distinct single prophecies at different times and on different occasions and were afterward brought together into one collection. The second division is occupied wholly with the future, with deliverance from Babylonian captivity and deliverance from sin and error through the Messiah.
Within that setting the verse belongs to prophecies of the earth's destruction and desolation because of sin. Those prophecies of judgment are set alongside the deliverance of God's children. Although spoken in Isaiah's own time, its warnings apply also to the last days.
