Isaiah 28:22
Now therefore be ye not mockers, lest your bands be made strong: for I have heard from the Lord GOD of hosts a consumption, even determined upon the whole earth. Now therefore be ye not mockers, lest your bands be made strong: for I have heard from the Lord GOD of hosts a consumption, even determined upon the whole earth.
The verse warns mockers and scorners not to mock God's warnings and principles and message, lest their bands be made strong. To have bands made strong means to have bonds of judgment made stronger, and restraints and punishment made stronger. It declares that a consumption, a consuming judgment, has been determined upon the whole earth by the Lord God of hosts.
That determined consumption belongs to the Lord's strange work described in the preceding verse, when God will rise up as in Mount Perazim and be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon to do His work, His strange work, and bring to pass His act, His strange act of judgment. God's judgment cannot safely be dismissed or displaced by human counsel, and rejecting God's standards and relying on human counsel cannot safely avert it.
The verse warns against holding to human ideas and human judgment, following one's own judgment, and refusing to be molded after the Lord's likeness and similitude, lest bands be made strong. Human standards in contrast to God's are feeble reeds. The Lord's standard is perfection of character, reached by following Christ's example and merits in self-denial and self-sacrifice and not living to please self, by learning the word of the Lord and obeying His voice rather than pleading for one's own mind and judgment to be supreme.
The chapter to which the verse belongs portrays conditions in the world today. The warning is written for the admonition of those living at the end of the world, upon whom the ends of the world are come. For those at the ends of the world it requires asking whether a course is the will of the Lord and obedience to the words given in Deuteronomy 7:6 and Deuteronomy 1, 7, and 8.
