Isaiah 28:26

For his God doth instruct him to discretion, and doth teach him.

God Himself instructs the one who plows and works the soil, giving him discretion and sound judgment for his labor. That instruction guides him in how to prepare and cultivate the ground, to handle different crops with fitting methods, to hold the plow, drive the oxen, and plant and gather seed. Skill, ability, and wisdom for useful work are gifts from God, who both bestows the power and teaches how to use it rightly, for this counsel comes from the Lord of hosts who is wonderful in counsel and excellent in working. As He taught Adam and Eve in Eden how to tend the garden, so He still teaches men today how to work the soil in the very best manner. This wisdom is gained by seeking it diligently as silver and as hidden treasure, by using the reasoning powers God has given to learn practical labor well and to draw varied products and treasures from the earth, for farming calls for intelligence and learning. Tilling the soil also trains the mind for service in saving souls and teaches of God's work of grace in the heart, so that daily labor reminds the worker of the Creator and Redeemer, making husbandry a wise and valuable calling that thousands crowded in the cities should take up.

God Instructs the Farmer

God Himself instructs the person who plows and cultivates the soil, teaching him discretion and sound judgment, practical wisdom and right judgment for his work. That divine teaching reaches ordinary agricultural labor and equips people to cultivate the land. It guides the farmer in how to cultivate the ground and handle different crops, use appropriate methods in his work, and prepare and sow the ground. The wisdom covers holding the plow and driving oxen, planting and sowing seed, and securing a variety of treasures and products from the earth by reason rightly used to obtain them.

Skill and ability with the wisdom needed for ordinary useful work are gifts from God, who provides both the ability and the wisdom to use it rightly. This teaching comes forth from the Lord of hosts, who is wonderful in counsel and excellent in working. As He taught Adam and Eve in Eden how to tend the garden, He still instructs people today how to work the soil in the very best manner, continuing to instruct the one who plows and plants and sows.

Seeking Wisdom for Service

The wisdom God promises is not gained passively but by seeking it diligently as silver and searching for it as for hidden treasures. The one who plows, plants, and sows is to seek in this earnest way for the sound judgment God gives for practical work with the soil.

The reasoning powers God has given men and women are to be used for this purpose, to study how to do practical labor well and to obtain the varied products of the soil. That study includes learning the best way to preserve physical health, and agricultural work itself calls for intelligence and learning. To use the mind to learn how to cultivate the land well is a right and proper use of reason.

Such labor with the soil trains the mind for service in saving souls. It also furnishes lessons from nature that help teach Bible truth and prepare workers for the saving of souls. Tilling and reaping further teach about God's work of grace in the heart, so that daily labor can keep the worker mindful of the Creator and Redeemer.

Working the soil is therefore a wise and valuable calling. Thousands now crowded into the cities should be working upon the land to gather its concealed treasures.
