Isaiah 29:20

For the terrible one is brought to nought, and the scorner is consumed, and all that watch for iniquity are cut off:

The verse promises the complete end of the cruel oppressor, the mocker who scorns God and hates reproof, and all who eagerly watch for evil in order to accuse others and find occasion to do wrong. Their work is to condemn a person for a mere word, to lay traps for the one who reproves wrong in public, and to deny justice to the innocent for worthless reasons. This cutting off comes when the deaf hear truth, the blind see out of darkness, the meek and poor rejoice in the Lord, justice is restored, and those who erred learn true understanding. As fulfilled in the work of Christ, their opposition does not stand, so repentant sinners who receive the message enter the kingdom while unbelieving opposers who honor God with the lips but keep selfish hearts are brought to nothing. Among God's people this exposes sitting in judgment on brethren, thinking too highly of self, looking for evil and misconstruing motives, and it commands leaving the judgment seat because all judgment is committed to the Son by whose unerring standard every word and work will be tried.

Words and Immediate Context

The promise is that the cruel, frightening oppressor is reduced to nothing, the mocker is finished, and every person who stays alert for wrongdoing is cut off. Oppressive and scoffing people who look for chances to accuse others are brought to an end. Those who seek occasions for wrongdoing and eagerly pursue evil are removed and plotted evil is stopped. The next verse explains their conduct as condemning a person over a word, entrapping one who corrects wrong, and denying justice to the innocent.

The terrible one is the cruel oppressor who uses power to frighten and crush. The scorner is the mocker who scorns God, despises reproof and correction, and treats warnings with contempt. Those who watch for iniquity are those who eagerly look for evil, live alert for a chance to complain, and watch for opportunity to take from God and man in small and large things. They watch for chances to accuse others, to misconstrue motives, and to find occasions for doing wrong.

Their work is to make a man an offender for a word, turning a spoken word into ground for guilt and condemnation. They lay a snare for reproof, trapping the one who reproves wrongdoing at the gate or in public and who speaks against injustice. They turn aside the just and twist justice away from the innocent for worthlessness, for trivial and empty reasons. This includes making a great fire out of a spark, charging evil against those who do not meet expectations and carry out cherished ideas, and revealing bitterness of spirit when personal ideas and will are crossed.

This cutting off happens in that day when the deaf hear the words of the book and the blind see out of obscurity and darkness. At the same time the meek increase their joy in the Lord and the humble and poor among men rejoice in the Holy One of Israel. Then justice is restored and the just are vindicated. Then Jacob shall not be ashamed nor grow pale, but seeing his children sanctifies God's name and fears God. Then those who erred in spirit come to understanding and those who murmured learn doctrine and return to true teaching.

Prophetic Judgment and Remnant

The opposition of the terrible, the scornful, and those watching for iniquity does not prevail against the prophesied work of Christ, for they are brought to an end while those who make men offenders for a word, lay snares for reprovers, and turn aside justice are exposed. When the meek and poor turn to God and the spiritually deaf and blind are healed, repentant sinners who receive the message of John and of Christ enter the kingdom, while unbelieving opponents meet this foretold judgment.

The marvelous work and wonder is done among a people honoring God with mouth and lips while hearts follow selfish gain, bringing oppressors to nothing, consuming mockers, and cutting off all eager for evil. Their course will not stand before God when men misuse positions of trust, despise warnings and messengers, and oppose justice. The same condition portrays the present world, especially where truth has been rejected under persuasive deceptive words, with a call for those who once knew truth but turned away to return to God. It is fulfilled upon professed teachers living out blinded principles while holding truth without heart conversion, retaining hereditary and cultivated character, mingling their own spirit with counsel, and confederating to do what God forbade, so that they misrepresent God, insult His honor, weaken His work, dishonor heavenly truth, and cause justice, mercy, and love for God and man to fall in the streets with equity unable to enter.

The prophecy stands connected with coming destruction upon cities because the day of the Lord is near, marking the end of the oppressor and scorner and the cutting off of plotters and pursuers of wrongdoing. It warns against relying on self-made light and calls for trust in the Lord, and against trusting those who disobey divine warnings and despise reproof. After this cutting off God has a remnant people purified, made white, and tried, whose teachers are no longer hidden but are seen and heard directing the way when turning to the right or the left.

Leaving Judgment to God

Among God's people the verse exposes those who sit in judgment on brethren and speak evil of them, thinking more highly of themselves than they ought. It is those who reveal bitterness of spirit when their own ideas and will are crossed, who cherish the feelings of an unconverted heart, who live for self with self as the center, who watch for an opportunity to complain, who look for evil and charge evil against those who do not meet their expectations and carry out their ideas, who misconstrue motives and make a great fire out of a spark. Such faultfinding includes making a man an offender for a word, laying a snare for the one who gives reproof, and turning aside the just. The same cutting off falls on those who claim loyalty yet watch for a chance to take in small and large things, on men in responsible positions as counselors and wise men who hold truth without heart conversion and keep old hereditary and cultivated character, mingling their own spirit with counsel and even confederating to do what is expressly forbidden. By this course they depart from the Word, disregard it, fail to act out the lessons of Christ, set a wrong example for others, and aid wrong by encouraging those not walking in the Lord's ways.

The verse therefore commands to keep off the judgment seat and to stop indulging in criticizing, condemning, and evil speaking against brethren. It commands to stop nursing grievances and hard feelings and sowing them in others. Those who once knew the truth but turned away are called by this chapter to return to God.

The reason is that all judgment is committed to the Son, so no one can be in harmony with Christ while doing this cruel and wicked work. Human words and works will be judged not by the light in which people view them but by God's unerring standard. Under that standard faults and imperfections stand exposed.
