Isaiah 3:14
The LORD will enter into judgment with the ancients of his people, and the princes thereof: for ye have eaten up the vineyard; the spoil of the poor is in your houses. The LORD will enter into judgment with the ancients of his people, and the princes thereof: for ye have eaten up the vineyard; the spoil of the poor is in your houses.
The ancients and the princes called to account are Judah's elders and rulers, the leaders of God's people. Their office required them to uphold justice and to pity and protect the needy and helpless. To have eaten up the vineyard means to have abused the community entrusted to their care. They exploited and oppressed the poor, gaining wealth by taking what belonged to the poor and storing the spoil and plunder in their own houses, while the poor suffered oppression and their goods were kept in the houses of the powerful.
For this oppression and denial of justice to the poor, God brings His charge against them and enters into judgment with them. Their failure in this trust brings them under divine judgment for consuming what belongs to the people. The prophecy of the chapter applies to the last days, reproving those who focus on appearance and display.
