Isaiah 3:15

What mean ye that ye beat my people to pieces, and grind the faces of the poor? saith the Lord GOD of hosts.

The verse is the Lord's rebuke to the powerful and the leaders in Judah for crushing the poor and needy, seizing what was theirs and exploiting them for gain with pitiless injustice. To beat to pieces and grind faces pictures severe, crushing harm, treating His people as if they could be ground down for the advantage of others. God sees and justly weighs every motive and act, and every unjust transaction is recorded and kept in account in heaven. He bears long with the guilty, but when pride and injustice reach the limit of His forbearance He brings retribution, meting to oppressors what they have meted to others. Grinding the poor is still done through selfish and fraudulent dealings that enrich the strong while harming the needy, by forcing workers to labor for less than their work is worth and by charging the poor extortionate fees for simple care.

Meaning in Judah's Crisis

In Judah the rebuke falls on the powerful and on the leaders for oppressing the poor and needy, taking what belonged to them and exploiting them for gain with crushing injustice. Justice was perverted and the poor received no pity while this abuse went on. Those charged to protect the helpless ignored their cries. The words for beating to pieces and grinding the face picture severe, crushing harm done to God's people. They expose a spirit that treats the poor as if they could be crushed for the advantage of others.

That injustice against the poor had become part of a stubborn, sinful condition, which is why warning and reproof were necessary. The passage stands in a prophecy reproving the daughters of Zion for caring only about appearance and display. That prophecy applies to the last days, where it still condemns the oppression and crushing of God's people, especially the poor. The oppression and misery denounced do not arise because there is too little wealth in the world. They come because people misuse the Lord's funds and turn away from the One who can bring relief and happiness.

God Sees and Judges

God sees and justly weighs the motives and actions behind every dealing with the poor, and grinding their faces means exploiting them through unjust and selfish treatment to exact wealth from them. Such unjust, fraudulent business dealings enrich the powerful while harming the needy. Every such unjust transaction is recorded in heaven, where God keeps account of it.

He bears with the guilty for a time, yet He will bring retribution for this oppression. That retribution comes when human pride and injustice reach the limit of His forbearance. It comes when the guilty persist in pride and in disregard for His law.

Those who oppress the poor will have meted to them what they mete to others. They themselves will suffer loss through sickness and adversity.

Grinding the Poor Today

To grind the faces of the poor is to exact wealth from them by unjust business dealings that enrich the powerful while harming the needy. Such dealings are selfish and fraudulent, exploiting the poor for gain.

This includes employers and managers in positions of authority who take advantage of circumstances to force workers to labor for less than they have earned and less than their work is worth. It includes physicians who charge exorbitant, extortionate fees for simple medical care or simple services to a poor person in need. Such overcharging is fraud and extortion, whatever the profession or its outward respectability, and it is as much oppression of the poor as unreasonable prices or excessive professional fees in other occupations. It also includes dealing harshly and unfairly through selfish, mean dealing with one who has been kind and faithful, instead of showing generous care and sympathy.

Such exploitation displeases God, who sees the injustice, holds oppressors accountable, and will judge it. Those who have wronged others in this way must give up their selfishness and make restitution.
