Isaiah 32:18

And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places;

My people will dwell in a peaceable habitation with secure dwellings and quiet resting places in the paradise of God, in the better heavenly country to which they journey toward rest and peace and joy. It is a permanent and lasting home in the restored inheritance, the peaceful land made new, given after a life as pilgrims and wanderers. There violence and destruction are gone, and sickness and sorrow and death are no more. Even now God gives His people a secure and peaceful refuge in communion with Him through prayer, open at any time amid active work and many cares and heavy responsibilities. This was seen when Goshen alone was spared the hail while judgment fell around it, and when Daniel as a burdened statesman prayed three times a day, showing that safety for nations and individuals is found in obeying God and resorting to His presence.

Future Home of Peace

The verse promises that God's people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation and in sure dwellings and in quiet resting places. That dwelling is the future home awaiting God's servants in the paradise of God, the better, heavenly country toward which they are journeying. It is the prospective rest and promised resting place prepared for them, where they will enjoy rest and peace and joy.

That home is permanent and lasting, found in the restored inheritance, the peaceful country of inheritance and the peaceful land made new. It is entered after a life as pilgrims and wanderers, when the saved and redeemed dwell securely and rest in quiet.

There the home is free from violence and destruction, and the life lived in it is free from sickness and sorrow and death.

Present Refuge and Protection

God's people dwell safely while judgment falls around them. That was fulfilled when Goshen alone was spared the hail in Egypt, and the protection showed that the elements obey God. True safety for nations and individuals lies in obeying God and standing for truth and righteousness.

The verse assures God's people of a secure, peaceful place of rest found in seeking communion with God in prayer. Those who desire it can come to Him at any time and find refuge in His presence, even amid active work and many cares and heavy responsibilities, and trust His care. Even people occupied with active labor and public responsibility can at any time resort to God's presence and feel assured of His promise and His Holy Spirit. Daniel praying three times a day while a statesman shows how this dwelling is entered. All who truly desire it can find a place for communion with God where no ear hears but God, open to the helpless, distressed and needy.
