Isaiah 33:15

He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil;

Isaiah 33:15 answers who can stand and live safely in the presence of God when His judgment comes and His might is made known near and far, while the fearful and hypocritical are afraid. Only the person of righteous character can dwell there, one who lives rightly and speaks honestly, who rejects profit from oppression and refuses bribes, who will not listen to bloodshed and violent plans and will not look upon evil. These walking, speaking, hand, ear, and eye pictures stand for spiritual qualities rather than mere outward acts. Such people will live securely on high with God as their rocky fortress, with bread given and water made sure even in the time of trouble, and their eyes will see the King in His beauty in the land very far off. They will be delivered and pass unharmed through pestilence, tempest, earthquake and consuming judgment upon transgressors, because righteousness is both upright conduct and deliberate refusal to see or hear evil so that thought, speech, and action remain pure.

Character Fit for God

Isaiah 33:15 answers who can dwell with the devouring fire and everlasting burnings. That is who can stand in the presence of God and dwell safely with Him when judgment comes. It is asked in the day of God when He makes His might known to those near and afar, while sinners in Zion are afraid and hypocrites are surprised with fearfulness.

Only the person of righteous character can dwell there. He is one who walks righteously and acts justly, and who speaks honestly and uprightly. He despises and rejects profit and gain gotten through oppression. He shakes his hands from holding and taking bribes. He stops his ears from hearing of blood and bloodshed, including murderous and violent plans, and he shuts his eyes from seeing and looking upon evil and violence.

These descriptions are figures that represent spiritual things and spiritual realities and qualities.

Promise to the Righteous

Those described in the verse will dwell securely on high, with their place of defense as the munitions of rocks, protected amid danger when judgment comes. Their secure dwelling is the answer to who can abide the devouring fire and everlasting burnings, and the verses that follow promise safety, defense, and deliverance to the just, honest, and uncorrupted. To them bread is given and water is made sure, with food supplied and water made reliable even amid danger. This provision includes bread and water secured for the remnant in the time of trouble.

Their eyes shall see the King in His beauty and behold the land that is very far off, the distant land. That sight belongs to those who dwell amid God's consuming fire in uprightness, who are kept secure and provided for. They will be delivered when judgment comes and pass unharmed through pestilence, tempest, and earthquake. They remain safe at the time when God is a devouring fire to transgressors, because they live uprightly, reject gain from oppression and bribes, and refuse to listen to or look toward evil and bloodshed.

This promise looks to Christ's coronation, when He will acknowledge His faithful, spotless people and they will share in His glory. Their righteousness is part of the judgment and righteousness by which Zion is established.

Living the Verse Today

The standard of walking righteously and speaking uprightly, despising oppressive gain, refusing bribes, stopping the ears against bloodshed and shutting the eyes against evil, belongs to those entrusted with responsible positions, and especially to editorial work. Such workers are to be faithful householders who give meat in due season and present present truth, guarding publications so that unsuitable articles for this time are not introduced. They are to do this work as in full view of the whole universe of heaven.

Those who meet this standard shall dwell on high, hid in the cleft of the rock, with the munitions of rocks for defense and with bread and water made sure. There they see Jesus and are quickened by His Holy Spirit, and their eyes shall see the King in His beauty and behold the land that is very far off. Such urgency and nearness of protection belong together because important issues must soon be met and there is not a moment to lose, and because the Lord God is not asleep.

Righteousness in this verse is both upright conduct and deliberate refusal to engage with evil. The righteous turn away from harmful sights and sounds, shutting the eyes and stopping the ears to avoid sinful knowledge. By this guarding of what is seen and heard, purity of thought and action is preserved. Speech is thereby also guarded from corruption and deceit.
