Isaiah 34:8

For it is the day of the LORD’s vengeance, and the year of recompences for the controversy of Zion.

The verse speaks of the final judgment and perdition of ungodly men, which is the Lord's day of vengeance and the year of recompenses for the controversy of Zion. It is the appointed time when the Lord repays the cause of Zion, answering the long controversy over His people. That recompense falls upon the wicked and takes place in and on the earth, where they are destroyed by fire and consumed.

The execution comes when fire comes down from God out of heaven, the earth is broken up, and devouring flames burst forth from every yawning chasm until even the rocks are on fire. The surface of the earth becomes one molten mass, a vast seething lake of fire. There in the earth the wicked receive their recompense, punished according to their deeds.

In that same judgment Satan himself bears the penalty for his own rebellion and for all the sins he caused God's people to commit. In this final destruction justice is satisfied, and God's justice and righteousness in the cause of Zion, His people, are made plain and publicly vindicated before heaven and earth.
