Isaiah 36:16
Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me: and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his own cistern;
The king of Assyria offered the people of Jerusalem that if they surrendered to him, each one could go on eating from his own vine and his own fig tree and drinking water from his own cistern. That promised security and prosperity through submission was false and only temporary, holding out safety for the present while concealing his purpose to afterward remove and deport them to another land. The offer of familiar comforts was calculated to turn the people against Hezekiah and to undermine their trust in the Lord.
