Isaiah 36:19

Where are the gods of Hamath and Arphad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim? and have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?

The question is the taunt of the Assyrian Rabshakeh, demanding where the gods of Hamath and Arphad are and where the gods of Sepharvaim are. Those gods had failed to save their own lands from Assyria's power. In the same breath he pressed the point that Samaria had not been delivered out of Assyria's hand.

He held up those conquests as proof that the Lord could not deliver Jerusalem either. In doing so he placed Israel's God on the same level as the powerless gods of the conquered nations. The challenge was thus a direct blasphemy against God's power to save His people.
