Isaiah 36:5

I say, sayest thou, (but they are but vain words) I have counsel and strength for war: now on whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?

Boastful claims to possess wise counsel and military strength are empty grounds for confidence when they are used to justify rebellion against God. Such confidence is exposed as vain words, not real power, because it sets human planning and force in opposition to divine authority. Trusting in Egypt instead of God is like leaning on a broken reed or shattered staff that pierces and wounds the hand of anyone who leans on it. The injury is certain, for reliance on that earthly support brings harm rather than help to those who depend on it. The warning is against depending on human power instead of turning to the living God for deliverance.
