Isaiah 38:17
Behold, for peace I had great bitterness: but thou hast in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption: for thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back. Behold, for peace I had great bitterness: but thou hast in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption: for thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back.
This is Hezekiah's praise and testimony to the living God of heaven after he was spared from mortal sickness when all other hope had fled, thanking God for granting him a new lease of life. His illness had brought him great bitterness, but God in love to his soul delivered it from the pit of corruption and death and cast all his sins behind His back. God extended his life in answer to his prayer, while also directing that a fig be applied to the affected part. The recovery was confirmed by the miracle of the shadow on the sundial turned back ten degrees.
That recovery was an act of God's compassionate mercy. The testimony presents God as the upholder of all created things whose favor gives life, and acknowledges His supreme sovereignty as able to perform so great a wonder. Wise men in Babylon who gave much attention to astronomy noticed the turned-back shadow and marveled, and when King Merodach-baladan learned the wonder had been wrought as a sign of the king of Judah's recovery, he sent ambassadors to Hezekiah to congratulate him and to learn more of the God who could perform so great a wonder.
That healing experience was to be told to the seekers after truth from the plains of Chaldea who came from a far-away land so they could learn of God, and telling it could have led them to acknowledge God and brought momentous transformations. For this mercy Hezekiah gave thanks and pledged to serve God through the rest of his life. The account shows that trusting God for healing does not mean neglecting simple remedies or the natural means God provides, since using them can work in harmony with faith.
Not even one of God's straying sheep is overlooked or left without help, for Christ will rescue everyone who submits to be ransomed from the pit of corruption and from the briers of sin, and that rescue is success and joy in recovery, not failure.
