Isaiah Sees a Glowing Cloud Over Zionby emmanuel_higgins

Isaiah 4:5

And the LORD will create upon every dwelling place of mount Zion, and upon her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night: for upon all the glory shall be a defence.

The Lord will create over every dwelling place of Mount Zion and over her assemblies a cloud and smoke by day and the shining of a flaming fire by night, and upon all the glory there shall be a defence or covering. The cloud and fire recall the pillar of cloud and of fire as the sign of His sheltering presence and care for His people. Its setting is in that day when the branch of the Lord is beautiful and glorious, when those left in Zion and Jerusalem are called holy, when the filth and blood have been washed and purged by the spirit of judgment and of burning, and when there is a tabernacle for a shadow from heat and for refuge and covert from storm and rain.

Its fulfillment comes in the last days in the great final struggle with the powers of evil. The defence means that the faithful, though mocked and derided by the world and marked for extermination, will pass unharmed through tempest and earthquake and pestilence while the world watches. The same God who is a devouring fire to transgressors of His law is to His people a safe pavilion.

The covering is drawn over God's people during the sealing time, and once the sealing is past it remains over them as shelter from the burning wrath of God in the seven last plagues and in the day of slaughter. God has begun to draw it and will soon draw it over all who are to have shelter, and He will work in power for those under it. But those not firmly planted on truth cannot have it drawn over them, and Satan works with every art to hold people where they are until the sealing is past so they are left without shelter.
