Isaiah 41:10
Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
Fear and dismay are forbidden because God is present with His people as their God, and He pledges to strengthen them, help them, and uphold them with the right hand of His righteousness. The Helper who gives this pledge is the everlasting Creator who never faints nor grows weary, yet He is not a distant force but a personal, compassionate friend and tender shepherd who knows every need. This is the voice of Christ Himself, who is present though unseen and who knows human sorrow from within because He has borne griefs, faced temptation, and wept, so no sufferer is left to struggle alone. Therefore His people are to make the Lord alone their trust rather than trusting in men, in finite counselors, or in self and personal strength and wisdom, fleeing from self-reliance to the sure foundation. That same presence secures those reproached, imprisoned, bereaved, afflicted, or burdened in persecution and loss, and it upholds His servants and workers so they need not fear or lose heart as they serve others.
Setting in Isaiah
The verse belongs to Isaiah 41-45, where God's purpose for His people is very fully revealed, and those chapters are to be prayerfully studied. It teaches that His people are His servants, redeemed and not forgotten, and are to look to Him alone. They are not to turn away from His wisdom to look to finite man for wisdom.
The promise is spoken to Israel as God's chosen servant whom He has not cast away. It is spoken to lowly and helpless ones as worm Jacob and men of Israel, by their Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel. He dwells with those of contrite and humble spirit to revive spirit and heart, to heal, to lead, and to restore comfort to those who come to Him with repentance and confession. The surrounding verses extend the same assurance to present-day Israel, that God is with them as their God to strengthen, help, and uphold them by His righteous power even when they are weak and face opposition. Those who cheerfully do the work given them and stand in their appointed place will have God working with them, and He is ready to uplift every soul that is cast down and to hold their right hand.
The promise is repeated in verse 13, where God says He holds His people's hand and will help them. Those who oppose them will be brought to nothing, put to shame, and become powerless. Therefore laborers for God whose work does not succeed as hoped or faces opposition can trust God rather than give way to unbelief. He can overcome those who interfere with His work of enlightening people and warning them about disobedience to His commandments.
The chapter declares God's power to help and sustain His people. Its promise of water and flourishing trees in the wilderness shows that God can bring renewal where there is barrenness, so His people need not fear or be dismayed in hardship. The promise is joined to His deliverance of those held captive and His role as their Savior and Redeemer, strengthening, helping, and sustaining them by His righteous power.
Meaning of Promise
The verse forbids fear and dismay because God is present with His people and is their God, pledging to strengthen them, to help them, and to uphold them with the right hand of His righteousness. It is spoken to those facing weakness, difficulty, fear and anxiety, answering discouragement and overwhelming burdens when it seems impossible to take another step. It is a promise of abundant grace to those who look to God and call upon Him when tested, to be relied on by those who walk humbly and trustingly with Him as they share truth and meet objections to faith. It calls for deep and earnest trust in God on that ground.
The promise is a certain assurance from the Lord that will surely be fulfilled. Those in the latter days who fulfill its terms place themselves where the Lord will do all He has promised. It comforts true, righteous, humble followers of Christ amid afflicting judgments coming near the close of this earth's history — earthquakes, storms on land and sea, and heavy calamities by sea and railroad. At that time Lucifer the fallen angel wars against God and all who exalt Him, causes calamities, and as a mighty deceiver takes many away to be deceived.
The promise rests on God's faithful character and covenant. He keeps His covenant and supplies every need, holding His people fast through trouble. His power is absolute and His understanding infinite, so no obstacle can defeat His purpose and He does not err in choosing how to help, while His infinite love and compassion never weary. With the majesty of omnipotence He joins the gentleness and care of a tender shepherd who knows every necessity and can give His servants the measure of efficiency their need demands. As eternal truth He never changes the covenant made with those who love Him, so there is no reason to fear He will fail to fulfill His promises, and trust in His presence brings peace even in the darkest hour, with assurance in temptation and distress that He sees, sympathizes, and will provide what is needed to develop character.
God and Christ Revealed
The promise is good cheer for every person in hours when the heart is faint and temptation presses sore, when obstacles seem insurmountable and life's aims impossible of achievement and its fair promises fail. It means the everlasting Creator who brings out the starry host by number and calls them by names, by greatness of might and strength of power so that not one fails, who faints not nor is weary, is personally present with His people and is their God. He gives power to the faint and increases strength to those who have no might, so Jacob and Israel need not say their way is hidden from the Lord and their judgment passed over from God. He Himself will strengthen and help and uphold them with the right hand of His righteousness, giving courage and steadfastness like the stars in their untroubled course, so they need not fear nor be dismayed. This is the message written in nature about who God is and what He is like as Creator, and His power displayed in creation is a source of comfort kept in memory by the Sabbath as a sign between Him and His people that He is Jehovah their God.
God is not an impersonal force but a personal, compassionate Helper who holds people up in struggle with sin, sorrow, and pain. With the majesty of omnipotence He joins the gentleness and care of a tender, faithful shepherd and tender friend, as an almighty arm that knows every necessity. He can give His servants the measure of efficiency their need demands, and this promise stands fast for the church.
The verse is the voice of Christ as a never-failing Helper through all trials, present though hidden from mortal sight and heard by faith. Because He has endured human sorrows, borne griefs, experienced struggles, encountered temptations, known tears and wept, and knows griefs too deep to be breathed into any human ear, He knows human sorrow. He has fought for His people and will uphold them to victory, giving help and strength in distress and telling them not to be afraid. Sufferers are therefore not left alone to struggle under temptation, to battle evil, and to be crushed with burdens and sorrow, and those who feel desolate and forsaken, whose pain touches no responsive chord in any heart on earth, are called to look to Him and live. This assurance is given through His angels in His continuing tenderness and knowledge of human sorrow in times of trial and fear.
One who has chosen Christ has joined himself to a power that no array of human wisdom or strength can overthrow, for God promises His presence with him, declares Himself to be his God, commands him not to fear or be dismayed, and pledges to strengthen him, help him, and uphold him with the right hand of His righteousness. Christ's sustaining arm supports all who trust in Him because He is above all the power of Satan. Hope is constantly strengthened by knowing Christ is our righteousness, and faith resting on that foundation stands fast forever. Instead of dwelling on the darkness of Satan and fearing his power, those who trust open their hearts to receive light from Christ and let it shine to the world in witness of His power over Satan.
The verse expresses the yearning of Infinite Love after those who feel powerless to free themselves from the snares of Satan. It graciously offers to strengthen them to live for God, telling them to put away fear and dismay because He is with them and He is their God, with assurance that He will give them strength and help them and hold them up by the right hand of His righteousness. Its promise answers fear and discouragement when believers face outward difficulties or feel too weak to begin and continue the Christian life. They need not rely on their own strength, for God's aid enables them to overcome through Christ the Conqueror.
Call to Trusting Faith
The Lord alone is to be the trust of His people, and they are not to trust in men or make flesh their arm. They are not to turn to finite, distant human counselors who do not know their circumstances, nor to rely on personal strength and wisdom, but in perplexity they may consult God directly for guidance, strength, courage and help. He may answer by directing them to go forward with promise of His presence and grace, and those who depend on His strength can grow from weak and timid into strong and brave to faithfully do the work entrusted to them. The call is to diligent work for repentance with most earnest work, for He will not be trifled with, and He gives strength to His own people.
The word is spoken to those resting hope on self and building on sand, warning of impending ruin and a breaking tempest, yet giving time to escape by fleeing from self-reliance to the sure foundation laid in Zion. All who look to Him and are saved to the ends of the earth shall not be ashamed nor confounded world without end, for He removes fear by His presence and dismay by being their God. He promises to strengthen, help and uphold with the right hand of His righteousness all who trust Him rather than their own wisdom when duty is accepted.
It stands among many abundant promises to all who obey His commandments and have faith in Christ, giving a rich experience of His goodness and love of more value than gold, recognized in times of great necessity. Every soul will be tested, and faith must not fail when tested but reveal the inward power of Christian hope, because God has made provision for abundant grace at such times. When His people look to Him and call upon His name He hears their cry and answers, being with them as their God to strengthen, help and uphold them. Human effort joined with God's will can accomplish what God commands, because God supplies the strength to do it for perfection of character through determined faith, with Christ beside to help.
Despondency in God's service is sinful and unreasonable, so there is no reason to fear that He will fail to fulfill His promises. He knows every necessity, He has all power, He can give His servants the measure of efficiency their need demands, His infinite love and compassion never weary, and with the majesty of omnipotence He joins the gentleness and care of a tender shepherd. He is eternal truth who never changes the covenant He has made with those who love Him, one who does not willingly give sorrow, whose promises never fail, and who as an unchanging friend strengthens every right purpose and helps and upholds by His pledged working for all who take hold of Him by faith. He calls to united Christian fellowship more binding than human kinship and to a higher platform where self is not glorified but Christ is, with promise that the light of His presence will then shine and illuminate all the way. This gives reason for confidence, joy, thanksgiving and deep earnest trust, especially for loyal commandment-keeping people and for those who walk humbly and trustingly while sharing truth amid objections.
Jesus is a wise and trustworthy Guide who is with believers and will help them as they walk by faith even when they do not yet understand what will become clear hereafter. Through Christ's mercy and pardon they are connected with the heavenly agencies.
Comfort in Suffering
The promise belongs to those who suffer persecution for Christ's sake, so the believer reproached for the truth, standing before earthly courts, shut in prison, or dying for Christ is not alone. God is with him there to give power, aid, and support, and his strength is union with God, with Christ, and with the Holy Spirit keeping him in Christ's love when reproach separates him from earthly friends. Christ stands beside him at trial, reveals Himself to him in prison to cheer the heart with love, and assures him at death that those who kill the body cannot hurt the soul, so the tempest-tried soul is then most dearly loved by the Saviour.
God's promises and power secure deliverance for those whose hearts are stayed upon Him, giving peace and strength against the enemy. Taking hold of the promise amid dangers and difficulties enables sufferers to rise in God's strength, because He is with them, will not forsake them, and will strengthen, help, and uphold them. Courage comes from trusting the Lord's power to strengthen and uphold His people.
The afflicted are assured that God is present and can be trusted without fear, and the helpless are invited to lean on His strong arm for strength and support. His help and sustaining grace are enough for the needs of the moment. His strong arm upholds in trouble and conflict, and amid heavy responsibility and overwhelming need His promise brings peace as burdens are entrusted to God while still doing the work that remains.
In affliction and deep suffering, even after a terrible accident, full trust is to be put in God alone as Helper, holding fast and clinging to His hand without discouragement. He strengthens, sustains, and relieves distressed souls, and upholds sufferers so they can do the work He still has for them to do. The greater the trials the more they need to behold Him and receive His strength every moment so His purposes are accomplished through them.
The afflicted, including those facing discouragement and painful treatment by others, are assured that God gives strength and help and firmly upholds those who trust Him. They are to cling to Him, place themselves in His hands, and look by faith beyond Satan's aggravations, knowing God judges righteously. He is a present help in every time of need and a source of comfort in grief and suffering, even when affliction remains mysterious.
The bereaved and grieving are assured that God will be with them, strengthen, help, and uphold them as they endure loss. They are to have faith in His support, for in great need, including grief after a loved one's death, the Lord sustains His child and does not fail. So also God's daughter is assured that God is with her through deep waters to strengthen and uphold her, and the waters will not overwhelm her.
The same assurance is applied personally to the fearful, discouraged, and burdened sinner: instead of looking to self for salvation, the sinner can entrust sins to Jesus, who strengthens, helps, and upholds by His righteous power. Those who feel too weak to continue are sustained by trusting His promises and relying on His strength to keep working even in weakness and under intense effort and physical strain. Confidence rests on the fact that God can remove seemingly impossible obstacles, so a crisis need not crush the courage of those doing what they can, for they are not forsaken but can take courage and trust the Lord will help in His own time and way.
God is shown as a friend who stays always, so no one is ever alone. One in trying condition should not give up but be cheerful and decided, ask God for help, stay firm expecting more trials, cling to Jesus and rely on Him for strength, and use the Bible as counselor and light in darkness.
Strength for Service
Fear and discouragement have no place in service, for God is present with His workers as their God and Helper and will uphold them with His power as they serve others. Those who labor to advance His cause are to take hold of that power and act in faith, prayer, and hope rather than give way to discouragement. Those who cheerfully do the work given them and stand in their appointed place will find Him working with them, and those serving where He has placed them will find Him to be their strength.
The same assurance stands fast for the church and encouraged the Washington workers and those praying for them to trust God rather than rely on human agents. They were to look to Him for strength to overcome discouragement and to act wisely. Those doing the school's work are likewise assured that God is with them to strengthen, help, and uphold them, so they need not fear or be discouraged. God's servants amid weakness and perplexity need not fear or lose heart, but are to trust in a living, compassionate Saviour.
The promise reaches the physician facing delicate and perilous operations, for Jesus stands at his side to counsel, strengthen, and steady him to act with precision and skill in saving life. God will do much for the medical student if he makes God his trust, and the very first lesson to be learned is dependence upon God. Accountable to God for responsible work, the student is to make God his counselor at every step, preserve God-given dignity in the fear of God, refuse policy or any departure from strict rectitude and veracity, be true to himself, and get hold and keep hold of the arm of infinite power for strength and help.
Sanitarium workers are assured that God is with them as their God so they need not fear or be discouraged as they serve others. They can rely on His presence and help while caring for the sick and sinful and pointing them to Christ. Medical missionary workers are likewise assured that God is their God and is with them, and His promise encourages them in leading the sick, sinners, and prodigals back to the Father.
God is with those who go forth to win souls and gives them strength, help, and support. Everyone wholly consecrated who prays in sincerity, lives in close communion with God, goes where God calls, and speaks the words God gives will have all necessities supplied. God does not leave such a worker alone but upholds him with infinite power, so humble, patient, Christlike labor relying on the Lord will have results to show.
God's servant is assured that God will strengthen and help her to do her duty, and trusting this, she asked for strength to speak despite severe weakness, believed He would sustain her, spoke, and was left stronger than before. God's people are called to trust Him and move forward faithfully even when the resources needed for a task are not yet in hand, resting in His presence, strength, help, and support without fear or discouragement. The same promise is applied in prayer that God will give the Holy Spirit, sustain, satisfy earnest spiritual desire, and bless efforts with prosperity.
The promise strengthened a worker sent to carry forward the work in the Southern field as God's helping hand, one tried all along and sometimes very severely. Though he made mistakes causing much disappointment, those mistakes taught valuable lessons, and God marks his efforts and his gratitude for help received, strengthens him by the promise, and blesses the work he tries to do. It was applied to Butler's work in Nashville, that the Lord is upholding him so he should take courage and remain faithful despite discouragement and annoyance. God's strong arm sustains John Kellogg so he can lean on God's strength, take courage, and continue the work appointed him. Its assurance applies to Daniel's demanding work, showing he needs living faith, courage, and the support of others who will encourage him to rely on God the Mighty Helper.
