Child Kneeling in Prayer with Unseen HandsBible World

Isaiah 41:13

For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.

The Lord God Himself takes hold of His people's right hand to sustain, strengthen, guide and uphold them at every step, telling them not to fear because He Himself will help them. The speaker is the heart of Infinite Love, Jesus Christ coming very near to each person individually, and His living presence gives the assurance its authority and comfort. It is given to those who feel powerless, faint, afflicted, fearful and discouraged, whose way seems hidden and whose obstacles seem insurmountable, to bring them courage, steadfastness and gladness instead of misery. To receive it they must place themselves where He can hold them, cooperate with His will, grasp the promise by personal faith, and seek Him in daily communion and prayer while trusting Him alone rather than men. Those who do are joined to a power no human wisdom or strength can overcome, for He holds them more firmly than they can hold Him and does not let go unless they withdraw, strengthening them to resist temptation, persevere as workers and overcomers, and meet the trials of the latter days.

Context and Wording

The promise belongs to Isaiah 41–45, where God very fully reveals His purpose for His people, and those chapters should be prayerfully studied. They teach reliance on His wisdom and humble dependence on Him rather than turning to finite man, to unsanctified self-sufficiency, or to distant human counsel for light. It is spoken to Jacob and Israel, though a worm, to the men of Israel, as His redeemed, loyal, commandment-keeping people. It stands joined to His pledges to strengthen them, to uphold them with the right hand of His righteousness, and to redeem them as the Holy One of Israel. He also pledges to hear the poor and needy without forsaking them and to bring life and fruitfulness to barren places, giving reason for praise and thanksgiving.

Those opposed to them and striving with them shall be ashamed and confounded and become as nothing and perish. To hold the right hand means He personally takes the hand and holds it fast, sustaining, strengthening, guiding, and upholding at every step. His spoken word, fear not, for I will help, is assurance against fear, discouragement, anxiety, and struggle. That assurance rests on His presence, His covenant faithfulness, His unlimited power and understanding, and His knowledge of every need. He cannot err, no obstacle can prevent Him from fulfilling His word, and His word will certainly be fulfilled.

Speaker and Presence

The speaker is the Lord thy God, the heart of infinite love yearning after the helpless who feel powerless to free themselves from Satan's snares. Jesus Christ comes very near and speaks individually to each person, promising to hold the right hand and give help. His living presence gives the words authority and comfort to all who are willing to receive His righteousness and be clothed with the robe of His righteousness. Those who place themselves where He can hold them hear Him speaking with assurance and authority as the One who lives forever, and holding Him up by living faith causes prayers to prevail. He gives this assurance of His helping presence to those who consecrate themselves to God by denying self, following Him in simplicity and self-denial, and lifting Him up by word and holy living, at a time when the working of the Spirit upon hearts and lives is especially needed.

The verse is a promise of God's personal support and abiding presence amid distress, that the Lord their God will take them by the hand and help them so they need not fear. He is near like a shepherd, goes with a person at every step of the way, and is with them throughout life's way sustaining and helping them at every step. He stands beside and continually at the right hand, holding the right hand and helping, and His presence gives confidence in witnessing and seeking to convince sinners of sin. He personally sustains and helps those who trust Him, holding them so that they will not fall. This living trust in His holding hand and help, learned especially in the morning of life and through daily communion, is what teaches children to trust God.

The help is for those who feel powerless to escape sin's snares, whose way seems hidden and cause overlooked, whose heart is faint, temptation presses sore, obstacles seem insurmountable, and life's aims seem impossible of achievement. God graciously offers to strengthen them to live for Him by taking hold of their right hand, removing fear, and promising His personal help and mighty saving reach. This brings good cheer and courage and steadfastness, and to those running the Christian race to be overcomers it brings happiness, glad satisfaction, and nobility of soul rather than misery and condemnation. It is for those seeking not earthly riches and honor but everlasting life that measures with the life of God and a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, by taking up the cross and following the Saviour with every power of the being. It rests on the everlasting God, Creator of the ends of the earth who does not faint or grow weary, who brings out the starry host by number, calls them all by name and lets not one fail, and who gives power to the faint and increases strength to those who have no might, as seen in the lesson of the stars in their untroubled course.

The verse is an especially comforting promise to the afflicted, cast down, fearful, struggling, weak, distressed, and discouraged, assuring them that God is with them to strengthen, help, uphold, and uplift every soul that is cast down. It is a promise to trust in a living, loving Savior through severe test and weakness, and through deep suffering and trials by holding fast to His hand. The Lord holds the hand and will hold it fast so there need be no discouragement, and He gives strength and hope each day. Faith is to rest on God's word rather than changing feelings, trusting He will not let go while they hold fast, and this leads to laying guilt at Calvary and trusting Him for pardon and righteousness. It is to be kept in mind, appropriated personally, prayed over, and carried to those in misery and distress to bring them happiness by leading them to accept God's promises, while He strengthens distressed people, relieves their discouragement, and leads them as they carry out the work He has for them.

Divine strength is near and available in weakness, for Christ's promise to be at the believer's right hand means His keeping power is at hand. Troubles, trials, and perplexities should be brought to Him rather than depending on other people to bear what only He can bear or seeking from people the help only He can give. The Lord Jesus stands beside people to help them and invites them to bring Him their troubles, assuring believers that God has not forsaken them and calling them to trust Him without fear, even the weakest saint. God stays close and holds the hand, giving companionship that brings strength in temptation, courage in difficulty, and grace for duty. Those who remain near Him, relying on His blessing with patience, humility, and meekness, find He relieves discouragement and provides help each day.

Power and Faithfulness

Those who have chosen Christ have joined themselves to a power that no array of human wisdom or strength can overcome or overthrow. The reason is that the Lord their God holds their right hand and tells them not to fear, promising to help them. That personal sustaining removes fear from God's people.

The assurance answers the complaint that one's way is hidden and one's cause is overlooked, bringing good cheer and courage and steadfastness when the heart is faint, temptation presses sore, obstacles seem insurmountable, and life's aims seem impossible of achievement. It rests on the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth who does not faint or grow weary. He brings out the starry host by number, calls them all by name, and lets not one fail, teaching from the stars in their untroubled course that His care does not fail. He gives power to the faint and increases strength to those who have no might. His promise rests on His presence, covenant faithfulness, and unlimited power and understanding; He is near like a shepherd, knows every need, cannot err, and no obstacle can prevent Him from fulfilling His word, which He will certainly fulfill.

He assures His chosen people that He will strengthen and uphold them, protect them from those who oppose them, and not forsake them in their need. He is with them as their God to strengthen them and uphold them with the right hand of His righteousness. This gives confidence amid those incensed against them and striving with them, whose hostility will come to nothing. All who are incensed against them and strive with them shall be ashamed and confounded and become as nothing and perish, and this help is given to Jacob though a worm and to the men of Israel as their Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel, whom He has not forgotten in this age.

When a believer puts a hand in His, Jesus holds that person more firmly than the person can hold Him. He leads those who place their hand in His and holds them securely, and does not let go unless they withdraw their hand. They are therefore urged to cling to Him and hold fast to Him, trusting that He will not let them go while they hold fast, so they need not be discouraged. This is comfort for weak faith and feelings of guilt, which are to be laid at Calvary while the believer trusts Jesus for pardon and His righteousness.

Conditions for Receiving Help

To have the hand held, a person must place himself where God can hold, lead and sustain him, hear with confidence, and meet the terms of the promise. That means being willing to be clothed with the robe of His righteousness, with no taint of self-seeking remaining. It means lifting up the Man of Calvary by living faith in God so that prayers will prevail. It means denying self, following Him in simplicity and self-denial, and lifting Him up by word and holy living. He comes very near to those who so consecrate themselves, speaking individually to each one with assurance and authority as the One who lives forever, at a time when the working of His Spirit upon heart and life is especially needed.

The human will must cooperate with the divine will, and when it does obedience becomes possible. The cooperating will becomes omnipotent, so that whatever God commands can be accomplished in His strength, for all His biddings are enablings. With determined faith aimed at perfection of character and perfection in action, He stands at the side to help. Heavenly intelligences then work together with the human agent, training the faculties through faithful service until the person becomes a refined, cleansed temple fit for God's use.

The promise is to be grasped by faith, kept in mind, appropriated personally, prayed over for strength, and carried to those in misery and distress to bring them happiness by leading them to accept it. Believers are to keep hold of the Lord with their hand in Christ's hand and hold fast through trials. They overcome not by their own ability but through Him as the source of all strength, staying near Him, relying on His grasp, possessing their souls in patience, meekness and humility, trusting He is able to save those who come to Him and free from anxiety.

The promise is made real by communion with the Father after Christ's example of solitary prayer, finding a quiet season at dawn and twilight and lifting the heart to God throughout the day. It means walking with Him in daily life and speaking with Him in prayer, coming with a broken and contrite heart without polished or lengthy words, trusting that He hears and gives strength. In that communion wisdom, power, guidance, strength in temptation, courage in difficulty, and grace for duty are received. Learned in the morning of life, this living trust in His holding hand and help brings freshness and power and joy and sweetness into life.

Receiving His help means trusting the Lord alone and not trusting in men, making flesh one's arm, or being led into uncertain paths by human counsel and the words of others. Trusting Him in this way honors Christ rather than depending on human advisers for wisdom and counsel. He calls His people to diligent earnest work of repentance and will not be trifled with. They are to recognize their weakness, walk humbly, trust His promised help amid opposition and discouragement, and not rely on their own efforts or claim credit for success.

Help in Daily Life

God reaches down to save and holds the right hand of those running the Christian race to be overcomers, telling them not to fear because He will help them. He guides through perilous and difficult places and keeps from falling into Satan's snare for those who grasp His hand in reliance upon Him. This help is for those who are not working for earthly riches and honor but for everlasting life that measures with the life of God and for a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. Taking up the cross and following with every power of the being does not bring misery or condemnation but happiness, glad satisfaction, and nobility of soul, for tender loving care lifts a person through the Spirit to stand as a conqueror and not as a failure, holding firmly to Christ.

His companionship at the side brings strength in temptation, courage in difficulty, and grace for duty, making His people able to resist temptation and remain true and steadfast. That strength enables perfection of character in action and giving up sinful habits including tobacco, rather than relying on one's own strength. Those who would have it must place themselves where He can lead and sustain them, as He comes near to each person, holds by the hand, and assures of help.

The promise upholds God's workers, servants, and witnesses when afraid or anxious about difficulties, for God is beside them and will help them as they walk humbly and trustingly with Him. Christ is continually beside His people holding and helping them, ready to help, so they need not fear when the work meets difficulty or opposition. His presence gives confidence in witnessing and seeking to convince sinners of sin, and the Holy Spirit gives strength and wisdom to answer questions and present convincing reasons for faith. This is ground for courage and perseverance when others are suspicious or critical and efforts go unappreciated, since discouragement can give force to those who suspect wrongly and grieve Christ who loves, while God as teacher and stronghold at the right hand upholds His servant to continue the given work and bring forth its results despite resistance, personally strengthening and guiding and teaching those who cooperate with Him for His glory so they can teach others.

The same holding belongs to medical missionary workers as His helping hand, with protection and strength for Jacob and Israel. The Lord God of Israel stands at the right hand of the physician to help and give success in difficult life-or-death operations, holding and working with the surgeon's hand. This belongs to every physician who will yield wholly to God and pray for patients before taking up instruments, and where this is done patients see jurisdiction under God and understand His power to carry the work through successfully and have more confidence, while truth is magnified and the work stands on the highest vantage ground with constant divine oversight and sustaining help bringing success as with difficult operations.

It is one of the promises of Isaiah 41 full of encouragement, assurance, and comfort for true believers, the sincere, humble, righteous followers of Christ in the latter days near the closing of this earth's history. It comforts amid afflicting providence in judgments of earthquakes, storms on land and sea, and heavy calamities by sea and railroad, when many who greatly sinned perish physically and the righteous themselves decidedly feel the result upon the rebellious and are afflicted. Then Lucifer the fallen angel warring against God perverts education, causes calamities, and as a mighty deceiver takes many away, yet the word will certainly be fulfilled and those meeting its terms place themselves where the Lord will surely do all He promised.

Being at the right hand to uphold and help keeps a person walking with God hand in hand with Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit placed upon them, leading them to love and glorify Him. This is God's work of bringing people out of sin and disobedience into favor with Him, with life and obedience hidden with Christ in God. He is with His people throughout life's way sustaining and helping at every step in times of trial, telling them not to fear, strengthening the distressed, relieving discouragement, and leading them as they carry out assigned work through deep suffering, holding fast to His hand in reliance, offering His helping hand to strengthen and save for trust and courage, and teaching children to trust Him through daily communion.
