Isaiah 41:15
Behold, I will make thee a new sharp threshing instrument having teeth: thou shalt thresh the mountains, and beat them small, and shalt make the hills as chaff. Behold, I will make thee a new sharp threshing instrument having teeth: thou shalt thresh the mountains, and beat them small, and shalt make the hills as chaff.
God promises to make His people a new sharp threshing instrument with teeth to beat mountains small and make hills as chaff, giving them power to overcome all opposition. He will strengthen and uphold them in need, defeat those who contend with them, provide for the poor and needy, scatter their enemies like chaff before the wind, and cause them to rejoice and glory in Him. This is a sure declaration of promise, assurance and encouragement for the latter days that will certainly be fulfilled to comfort true believers amid coming judgments and to prepare the way for Christ's second appearing. Though His chosen instrument is but a weak and humble worm, God can work through whatever means He chooses to accomplish immense results, calling His people to trust His wisdom alone rather than making flesh their arm. When they humble themselves, live in close communion with Him, and remain loyal and obedient to all His commandments, He clothes them with divine power so that no opposing force can stand against them or overpower His church.
Setting and Promise
The verse stands in Isaiah 41-45, where God very fully reveals His purpose for His people, and those chapters are to be prayerfully studied. The chapter belongs to a work in the last days to prepare the way for Christ's second appearing. It is a declaration from the Lord full of promise, assurance, and encouragement for the latter days, whose word will certainly be fulfilled, so that those who meet its terms place themselves where the Lord will surely do all He has promised, giving comfort to true believers amid the judgments coming upon the world.
The promise is that God will make Jacob and Israel a new sharp threshing instrument having teeth, to thresh the mountains small and make the hills as chaff, thereby giving His people power to overcome opposition. The surrounding promise assures that God will strengthen and uphold His people in need and opposition, defeat those who contend with them, and provide for the poor and needy. Their enemies will be scattered as the wind scatters chaff, and they will rejoice and glory in Him, a promise that calls them to trust His help.
The verse teaches trust in God's wisdom alone rather than turning away from Him to finite man for wisdom. There is to be no making flesh an arm, for the Lord is not to be trifled with.
Power Through Weak Instruments
The promise turns on deliberate contrast: the instrument is weak, humble, and seemingly insignificant, even as a worm, yet it is made to thresh mountains and beat them small and to make hills as chaff. What looks immense and overwhelmingly strong is overcome, because divine power is unlimited and can act through whatever means is chosen to accomplish great results.
The work itself belongs to God, who calls instruments into action to do His work. He guides, delivers, and sustains those who follow His will through crisis and through further duty and trial. That sustaining power is given to His messengers to subdue the opposition of the enemy and to advance His work. It comes when they humble themselves, receive His converting power, and are qualified by close communion with Him.
The call therefore is to diligent and most earnest work for repentance, to hold fast, and to work in faith despite intense opposition, trusting the Lord alone rather than making flesh an arm, for the Lord is not to be trifled with and He gives strength to His own people. If loyal and obedient to God, the church cannot be overpowered by the enemy, but its foes are as helpless as chaff before a whirlwind. As God's agency for proclaiming truth she is given divine power for a special work, and if loyal to God, obedient to all His commandments, honoring the Lord God of Israel and true to her allegiance, the excellency of divine power dwells within her so that no power can stand against her. Clothed in Christ's righteousness and withdrawn from all alliance with the world, a bright glorious day lies before her, with the light of God's truth shining undimmed amid the darkness of error to those in high places as well as the lowly.
