Isaiah 41:16

Thou shalt fan them, and the wind shall carry them away, and the whirlwind shall scatter them: and thou shalt rejoice in the LORD, and shalt glory in the Holy One of Israel.

The verse stands in Isaiah 41-45, where God's purpose for His people is very fully revealed, and those chapters are to be prayerfully studied. The chapter is to be read in connection with the work of preparing people for Christ's second appearing. The surrounding promises show God strengthening and helping His people in trouble and providing for the needy, and those acts of deliverance and provision reveal that He is their Creator and Helper.

The verse promises that God will empower His people and make Israel victorious over those who oppose them, picturing their enemies as chaff that is fanned and then carried away by the wind and scattered by the whirlwind. God can use people who seem weak to overcome powerful opposition, so that like a worm threshing mountains they can press forward by faith because God gives strength for the work. A church loyal to God and obedient to His commandments cannot be overpowered by the forces of the enemy, just as chaff cannot resist a whirlwind.

The church of Christ as God's agency for proclaiming truth will have the excellency of divine power dwelling within her, so that if she is loyal to God, obedient to all His commandments, and honors the Lord God of Israel, no power can stand against her. This unconquerable condition belongs to the bright, glorious day before her when the light of truth shines undimmed amid error to high and lowly, if she puts on the robe of Christ's righteousness and withdraws from all alliance with the world. Those He delivers are to rejoice in the Lord and glory in the Holy One of Israel, which means being redeemed and justified and finding righteousness and strength in Him. It means looking to God rather than to finite people for wisdom, trusting in the Lord alone and not trusting in men or making flesh their arm, for the Lord is not to be trifled with.

The verse is a declaration from the Lord full of promise and precious assurance for the latter days, comforting true believers amid the afflicting providence of judgments coming upon the world near the close of earth's history. At that time earthquakes, storms on land and sea, and heavy sea and railroad calamities afflict even the righteous through judgments on the rebellious, yet its word will certainly be fulfilled, and those in the latter days who meet its terms place themselves where the Lord will surely do all He has promised, giving encouragement even while Lucifer wars against God and deceives many. The verse calls God's people to diligent work for repentance and most earnest work, with strength to be given to His own people. It is applied to medical missionary workers as an assurance that God's great army will protect and strengthen those who work as His helping hand.
