Travelers Find Water in the Desert Sandby Heloise

Isaiah 41:18

I will open rivers in high places, and fountains in the midst of the valleys: I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water.

God answers the poor and needy who seek water until their strength fails with the assurance that He will hear them and will not forsake them, bringing abundant water where none is found and turning barren wilderness and dry land fruitful and full of life. He does this to display His creative power so that all may see and know together that His own hand has done it. The water is His love poured out without limit and righteousness and salvation poured down from heaven, and Christ opens this fountain for a sinful, suffering world, offering the free gift of the water of life to every thirsting soul so that those who hunger and thirst after righteousness are filled from His fullness. That invitation is to be repeated by every hearer and carried to the waste and desert places of the earth, bringing spiritual refreshment to a thirsty world. When His people repent and return to Him and abandon idolatry for loyalty to Him alone, He turns their wilderness into sources of abundant life and stands as their fountain of life and power. It is His unfailing promise to sustain His church and His servants in hard, barren fields where help seems unavailable, giving hope and courage in service, and as the heart is renewed what seemed desolate becomes a land of living streams.

Setting and Promise

Isaiah 41:18 stands in Isaiah 41-45, where God's purpose for His people is very fully revealed, and these chapters are to be prayerfully studied. It belongs to a chapter full of promises and assurance, offering encouragement for the latter days. The Lord will fulfill these promises for those who take the encouragement to heart and place themselves where He can do what He has promised.

The promise answers the poor and needy who seek water and find none until their strength fails for thirst. To them comes the assurance that the Lord will hear them and the God of Israel will not forsake them. He meets their thirst by providing abundant water even in barren places where none is found.

He will open rivers in high places and give fountains in the midst of the valleys. He will make the wilderness a pool of water and the dry land springs of water. With this He joins the planting of trees in the wilderness and desert, turning desolate places fruitful and full of life.

This transformation displays His creative power to make the wilderness fruitful where help seems unavailable. It is wrought so that all may see and know and consider and understand together that the hand of the Lord has done this. That united recognition confesses that the Holy One of Israel has created it and that He is Israel's Creator.

Christ's Gift and Mission

The water promised is God's love poured out without limit, like showers that refresh the earth, given to the poor and needy who seek water and find none until their strength fails for thirst. The Lord hears them and the God of Israel does not forsake them, but gives abundant water in high places and valleys and turns wilderness and dry land into pools and springs. This gift is righteousness poured down from heaven and salvation brought forth on earth, so that those who hunger and thirst after righteousness are filled by receiving of Christ's fullness grace for grace.

Christ has opened a fountain for the sinful, suffering world and offers the free gift of the water of life to every thirsting soul. The promise is the voice of divine mercy calling to come and drink and to receive the water of life freely. That invitation must be repeated by every hearer, women as well as men. It is fulfilled as the message of salvation is sounded everywhere and carried to the waste, valley, desert, and desolate places of the earth. There it brings spiritual refreshment to a thirsty, barren world, making those places where salvation is drawn with joy.

His people are not to turn away from His wisdom to look to finite man for wisdom, nor to trust in men or make flesh their arm, but to seek wisdom from Him and make Him alone their trust. They are to look unto Him and be saved, for He is God and there is none else, with righteousness and strength and justification found in the Lord alone. They are His servants whom He will not forget, whose transgressions He has blotted out and whom He has redeemed. He is not to be trifled with, and His people are to make diligent, earnest work of repentance, with strength given to His own people.

When people repent and return to God and abandon idolatry to return to loyalty to Him, He turns their wilderness and dry places into sources of abundant life and blessing. He opens fountains in valleys and living springs in deserts to refresh those who thirst for the water of life. This provision assures His loyal, commandment-keeping people that God is their fountain of life and power. His care makes dry and desolate places fruitful and answers the poor and needy who thirst by supplying life where there is none, giving the world evidence of His power and reason for praise and thanksgiving.

Encouragement and Application

Isaiah 41:18 is God's unfailing promise to His church and to His servants laboring in hard, barren fields that He will give the efficiency their need demands. When the poor and needy seek water and find none, He hears them and will not forsake them, but will open rivers in high places and fountains in the midst of the valleys, making the wilderness a pool and the dry land springs of water. He can supply what is lacking and sustain those doing His work where help seems unavailable, and He has power to help and uphold all who choose Christ. He will even plant trees in the wilderness and desert, so that all may see and know and consider and understand together that the hand of the Lord has done this and that the Holy One of Israel has created it. This assurance gives reason for hope and courage in service instead of despondency.

The verse belongs to a chapter full of promises and assurance that offers encouragement for the latter days. The Lord will fulfill these promises for those who take the encouragement to heart and place themselves where He can do what He has promised. That fulfillment includes literal provision, such as abundant pure water found in a well after years of drought, opening the way for the sanitarium work to advance.

The picture of streams and water in a wilderness illustrates how spiritual renewal changes the heart's view of God's word. What seemed desolate to the carnal mind becomes a land of living streams to the spiritual mind. What seemed barren to the unrenewed heart becomes a fruitful garden to the converted soul.
