Isaiah 41:6

They helped every one his neighbour; and every one said to his brother, Be of good courage.

Isaiah 41:6 stands in Isaiah 41-45, where God very fully reveals His purpose for His people. Those chapters should be prayerfully studied. In its plain sense the verse depicts the idol builders of old helping one another and urging one another to take courage, while craftsmen supported each other in making an idol secure.

This mutual human effort contrasts with God's assurance to Israel in the following verses that He has chosen them, will not abandon them, and will strengthen and help them. Its teaching is not to turn away from God and His wisdom to look to finite man for wisdom, but to look to and rely on God. The Lord alone is to be trusted, and men must not trust in men or make flesh their arm, and the Lord is not to be trifled with.

Isaiah 41 foretells the work of presenting the warning message to the world and giving people information about the truth. The verse is part of a declaration from the Lord full of promises, encouragement and assurance to comfort true believers amid the afflicting judgments coming upon the world near the closing of earth's history in earthquakes, storms on land and sea, and heavy calamities by sea and railroad, when the righteous will feel afflicted by judgments upon the rebellious while Lucifer the fallen angel wars against God and all who exalt Him, causes calamities, and as a mighty deceiver takes many from the ranks to unite them in deception. The word of the chapter will certainly be fulfilled in the latter days, and those who take its encouragement and place themselves where required will surely receive all the Lord has promised and should not be discouraged.

He calls His people to diligent work for repentance and most earnest work, and strength and good courage are to be given to His own people as they help one another. The verse means mutual help and encouragement in a common work. With a worthier aim it belongs as a motto for builders of character today.
