Isaiah 41:9

Thou whom I have taken from the ends of the earth, and called thee from the chief men thereof, and said unto thee, Thou art my servant; I have chosen thee, and not cast thee away.

Isaiah 41:9 belongs to Isaiah 41-45, where God very fully reveals His purpose for His people, and those chapters are to be prayerfully studied. The verse identifies Israel as God's servant, whom He took from the ends of the earth and called from its chief men and from distant places, choosing them and claiming them as His servants and assuring them that He has not rejected, forgotten, or cast them away. Those thus taken and chosen are redeemed and called to glorify Him.

Its assurance stands together with God's promise to be with His people and to strengthen, help, and uphold them, even when they face opposition. The verse calls God's people to look to Him alone for wisdom and to trust in the Lord alone, and not to turn away from Him to finite man, to human wisdom, to trust in men, or to make flesh their arm. It teaches each person to faithfully do the work God has assigned, trusting that God will work with those who serve cheerfully in their appointed place.

It calls God's people to diligent and most earnest work for repentance, gives strength to His own people for that work, and warns that the Lord will not be trifled with. It is part of a message of encouragement about God's chosen servant and His faithfulness, standing alongside Isaiah 40 as words that can help people become free in Christ. The setting of Isaiah 41 includes a prophecy of the work of presenting the warning message to the world. The verse is a declaration full of promise and assurance meant to comfort and encourage true believers amid the afflicting judgments coming upon the world near the close of this earth's history, including earthquakes, storms on land and sea, and heavy calamities by sea and railroad. It will certainly be fulfilled, and those in the latter days who fulfill its conditions place themselves where the Lord will surely do all He has promised.
