Isaiah 42:11

Let the wilderness and the cities thereof lift up their voice, the villages that Kedar doth inhabit: let the inhabitants of the rock sing, let them shout from the top of the mountains.

The verse calls the wilderness and its cities, the villages of Kedar, and the dwellers on the rocks and mountaintops to lift their voices in singing and shouting praise to the Lord. It is part of a new song to be sung across the whole earth, declaring God's glory and praise in distant and remote places in response to His saving work, beside the promise that He will go forth to overcome His enemies. It foretells a missionary advance now being fulfilled as truth is carried into mountains, hills, highways, byways, wilderness, and every place where souls are perishing without Christ. It requires gospel workers to enter the wilderness, the highways and byways, the rocks, and homes on the very mountaintops, even remote country places where no one else would go, until souls are converted and those inhabitants sing. Israel was given the work of causing the Lord's praise to be heard across the earth, and where its leaders failed the disciples were sent to make His salvation known, a work continued in the great and solemn warning message now to be presented to the world.

Universal Call to Praise

The wilderness and its cities are called to lift up the voice, with the villages inhabited by Kedar, the inhabitants of the rock, and those on the tops of the mountains called to sing and to shout praise to the Lord. The call embraces settlements and towns as well as wilderness places, rocky heights, and mountainous regions, picturing praise rising from remote places and diverse peoples. It is part of a new song of praise offered to God from across the earth, declaring His glory and His praise even in distant lands. That praise is shown spreading across varied places and peoples in response to His saving work, so that His praise was to be heard across the earth.

The song joins remote and varied communities in declaring His glory as described in the surrounding verses. It stands beside the promise that the Lord will go forth to overcome His enemies. It belongs to a revelation of God's purpose for His people, which does not direct them to turn from God and rely on human wisdom. It belongs also to truths to be studied in connection with Isaiah 40 and Second Peter, truths that define the deeply spiritual work to be carried forward. That work is reformatory, to be done with clear understanding and with no haphazard work, under the leadership of men worked by the Holy Spirit in thorough reformation.

Prophecy of Salvation Proclaimed

Israel was entrusted with causing the praise of the Lord to be heard across the earth, with wilderness places, Kedar's villages, rocky dwellings, and mountain heights called to lift their voices and declare His glory. Had there been faithful service in every part of the vineyard, souls would have been converted and people in distant places would have been led to praise Him. The good news of God's salvation was to reach even wilderness cities and villages, that those distant communities might share in the joy of salvation. Where Jewish leaders failed to do their work, the disciples were sent to make that salvation known.

The verse foretells the great and solemn work of the present time, the presenting of the warning message to the world. That work gives the world the reason for belief and for obedience to God's commandments. It is done through camp meetings that afford opportunity to give people the information they desire.

The set time to favor Zion will soon come, for God has provided men and means to accomplish His work as He ordained it to move, and He will not leave His people to shame. Covenant with Christ unites the majesty of an omnipotent King with the gentleness and tenderness of a caretaking shepherd. His work is to be presented before the world in distinct, holy, sacred lines, and the kingdom of God comes not with observation but by the gentleness of the inspiration of His word and the operation of His Spirit in the soul. God desires men to understand His claims upon them, and He will judge anyone who interposes between fellow men and God to lead them into paths not cast up for the ransomed. His work would now be much farther advanced in many places of the world had not man interposed to do a work God has not appointed.

Isaiah 42:10-12 sounds a new song of missionary advance that is being fulfilled now. Truth is being carried into the mountains and hills, into the highways and byways, into the wilderness and into all places, that the salvation of God may be revealed there. Souls in those places are to be converted, and ministers and all are to take hold with the simplicity of true godliness to carry the message of truth to those perishing without Christ. Those who bring souls to the knowledge of the truth will have hearts led out in thankfulness they cannot hold back, praising God themselves and leading others to praise God.

Labor in Remote Places

The wilderness with its highways and mountainous ways and byways must be entered with gospel work, including the rocks and the houses placed on the very tops of the mountains. That means going into remote country places where it seems nobody could get the truth before the people, where nobody else would go. It includes places where people have no decent clothes and cannot come out to be taught, requiring the workers to go to them. The word is fulfilled when servants of God labor in those places and souls are converted, so that the inhabitants of the rocks and mountaintops sing. Then families settle to make homes there, and young men press into all that surrounding country to work.

People live right on the rocks and right on the tops of the mountains, and those places are missionary fields as much as the cities. The call for those rock-dwellers and mountain-dwellers to sing, together with the encouragements that follow it, encourages carrying the gospel work to them. That work includes supplying them with books. The same call for a new song of missionary advance is being fulfilled now as truth is carried into the mountains, the hills, the highways and the byways. It exposes that the cities are neglected and unwarned, and calls for a decided change to take up missionary work for the cities despite fear and expense, with the Spirit of the Lord going at every step to glorify and honor the Lord upon the earth.

The salvation of God is to be revealed in the highways, in the wilderness, and in all places. Souls are to be converted there as ministers and all take hold with the simplicity of true godliness to carry the message of truth to those perishing without Christ. Those who bring souls to the knowledge of the truth will have hearts led out in thankfulness they cannot hold back. They will praise God themselves and lead others to praise God.
