Isaiah 42:9

Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare: before they spring forth I tell you of them.

God foretold former events that have happened exactly as spoken, and He announces new events before they appear, proving He knows the future and can be trusted for what is still to come.
The new events He announces center on His chosen Servant upheld by His Spirit, who brings justice and truth to the nations without harsh outcry, spares the bruised reed and smoking flax, opens blind eyes, frees captives from darkness, and is given as a covenant and light to the Gentiles.
This mission belongs to His foreknown and ordained plan, so His work advances as He has purposed and His people will not be put to shame but can trust Him to fulfill His promises.
This declaration is to be studied diligently as the true science of redeeming grace, treasured above earthly riches and held firmly against false human wisdom, in connection with Isaiah 40 and 2 Peter.
Its call for a new song is met now by carrying truth into mountains, highways, byways, and neglected cities, with earnest Spirit-led missionary and reformatory work rather than display.

Foreknowledge and Servant Promise

Behold, the former things foretold have come to pass, and new things are declared before they spring forth, showing foreknowledge of the future, proof of the word spoken, and trustworthiness in what is to come. Fulfilled events confirm that what was announced beforehand has happened, and what is now announced will happen before it appears. It is part of words of warning that cannot be disregarded, to be brought again and again before God's people to call them to earnest work as the Spirit moves.

The new things are the work of the chosen Servant and Messiah, upheld by the Spirit. He brings judgment and truth to the Gentiles without crying or lifting up His voice in the street, breaks not the bruised reed and quenches not the smoking flax, and fails not nor is discouraged till He has set judgment in the earth. He establishes justice and gives God's law to the nations, is called in righteousness and held and kept and given for a covenant of the people and for a light of the Gentiles, to open blind eyes and to bring prisoners from the dungeon and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house. He acts to bring light to the nations, to free from spiritual bondage and darkness, and to prevail against His enemies, while God will not give His glory to another nor His praise to graven images.

Israel had been given this work of bringing light to the Gentiles and opening the way for people to know and praise God, but neglected it. Had they been faithful, people throughout the earth would have been converted and would have praised God.

The setting presents God as Creator of the heavens and spreader out of the earth and giver of breath to the people upon it and spirit to them that walk therein, with power and care for His people and yearning desire to bring those ignorant of His purposes under His beneficent care. It calls for a new song and glory unto the Lord from the end of the earth, from the sea and the isles, from the wilderness and the mountains.

The verse belongs to a prophecy of the Saviour's mission as part of a foreknown, ordained plan, and to a chapter of promises and assurance about God's purpose for His people and the progress of His ordained work. His work therefore moves according to what He has ordained, and He does not leave His people to shame. Believers are encouraged to trust that He will fulfill what He has promised, and to seek wisdom from Him rather than from finite human beings.

Study and Missionary Work

Isaiah 42:9 is to be diligently studied as the true science of redeeming grace, to be treasured above gold and silver. It calls for rejecting confusing human science and every false science and for standing firmly on the Word of God. It is a call to seek wisdom from God rather than from finite human beings and to trust His wisdom rather than finite human wisdom. It is to be studied in connection with Isaiah 40 and with 2 Peter, with the truths of those chapters considered together.

The declaration belongs to words of warning that cannot be disregarded and to essential things to be brought over and over to the attention of God's people. It calls them to earnest work as the Spirit moves rather than devoting time and means to display. It calls for a reformatory work to be carried forward in deeply spiritual lines, where hearts are not prepared and a mixed company does not understand the nature of the work. That work requires clear understanding and no haphazard work, with men worked by the Holy Spirit leading out in thorough reformation.

The new things God declares and the new song are being fulfilled now by carrying the truth into the mountains, the hills, the highways and the byways. This calls for a decided change to take up missionary work for the neglected, unwarned cities. That going is to be at every step with the Spirit of the Lord, to glorify and honor the Lord on the earth.

The chapter foretells the great and solemn work of presenting the warning message to the world and giving people the reason for this belief. This includes using camp meetings to give the information the world desires and using money to present truth. It includes establishing sanitariums in different parts of the world as an educating power to reform people and restore in them the moral image of God. It works by converting men through knowledge of the Word so they use their means and ability to extend knowledge of the truth. It arouses slumbering senses to see how far people have departed from the Lord's ordinances by worldly policy and transgression against God's law.

The declaration grounds being in touch with nature and caring for the sick through outdoor life, exercise, good food, the best treatments, and faith in God's healing power for restoration of health.
