Isaiah 43:10

Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.

God declares His chosen people to be His appointed witnesses and servant to know, believe, and understand that He alone eternally is God, with no God formed before Him nor after Him. Beside Him there is no Saviour, for He alone redeems, saves, upholds, and none can hinder His work or deliver from His hand, so His people are to look to Him alone for salvation, righteousness, and strength. To be His witnesses means open, courageous confession before heaven and men in clear voice and bold testimony in trial, telling from personal experience what He has done and letting good works glorify Him. That witness is borne by wholehearted obedience to His law, by reflecting Christ in love, purity, honesty, and mercy in home, business, and daily duty, and by improving every talent and opportunity in cooperation with the Holy Spirit. Every believer who has tasted His grace is appointed to this work, and together they are to carry His truth and warning to all nations, cities, and peoples until the end, exalting Christ and His law amid darkness.

Verse Words and Context

The title my servant can denote anyone God selects and appoints for a particular work, even one who does not yet know His will, as in the case of Nebuchadnezzar. Such a servant is chosen to do appointed work and made a witness to Him, appointed to know and believe that He alone is God and Saviour. The title therefore applies to appointed messengers who bear His warning message and testify to Him.

The verse belongs to Isaiah 41-45, which fully reveal God's purpose for His people as His chosen servant and witness. Israel is His servant, not forgotten by Him but redeemed and glorified in Him, called to know that the Lord alone is God. The chapters are to be studied prayerfully, calling His people to look to Him for salvation, righteousness, and strength rather than turning from His infinite wisdom to finite human beings for wisdom.

Its setting promises that God has redeemed and formed His people, is with them through danger and distress, and acts for His glory. The people are chosen as servant and witness so they may know and trust Him as the only God, understanding that no god existed before Him or will come after Him, with the following verse identifying the Lord as the only Saviour. The chapter gives words of assurance and precious promises from the Lord to encourage believers, to be fulfilled in the latter days.

The speaker is the eternal I AM, meaning eternal presence with past, present, and future alike before Him, declaring His unique identity. His people are His witnesses and His chosen servant to know and believe and understand that He is He, that no God was formed before Him and none shall be after Him. He alone is Lord, and beside Him there is no saviour.

One God and Saviour

The verse appoints God's chosen people as His witnesses and servant, separated from the world and its customs as His peculiar people to uphold His law and testify to His truth. Their appointment is that they may know and believe Him and understand that He alone is God, with no god formed before Him and none to come after Him. By that life of going forward in the strength of the Lord to uphold His law in the earth they come to this knowledge, trusting Him as the only God who is able to work for them and make them fully able to go up and possess the promised land. The surrounding promise is that He has redeemed and formed them, is with them through danger and distress, and acts for His glory, and their witness testifies to His unique power and saving care. That witness of “Ye are My witnesses” includes presenting the truth about God's law before people throughout the world, especially the binding claims of the fourth commandment.

Beside Him there is no Saviour, as the following verse declares. He declared and saved and showed when there was no strange or foreign god among them, foretelling events and acting for them as proof of His unique power. He was before the day was, none can deliver out of His hand, none can hinder His work, and He is the Holy One, the Creator and King. The speaker is the eternal I AM, meaning eternal presence with past, present and future alike before Him, declaring that He is He and that He alone is Lord. Such witnessing does not happen by continuing in disobedience and transgression but by rendering pure, whole-hearted obedience to God's law, through which He manifests Himself in His people so they become witnesses before the universe of heaven and before an apostate world making void the law of God to the power of redemption.

The verse therefore calls God's people to look to Him for salvation, righteousness and strength rather than relying on human wisdom. Israel is His servant, not forgotten by Him but redeemed and glorified in Him, and He does not instruct them to turn away from His infinite wisdom to seek wisdom from finite man. The full purpose is revealed in Isaiah 41-45, which are to be prayerfully studied. Included in the verse is the call to trust the Lord alone and not human beings, and to turn to Him in earnest repentance.

Chosen Witness People

Israel is chosen as witness and servant, separated from the world and its customs as a peculiar people to uphold the law in the earth and testify to the truth, going forward in the strength of the Lord that others may know and believe God and understand that He alone is God, before whom no God was formed and after whom none shall be, and that He is able to work for them and make them fully able to go up and possess the promised land.

Bearing this testimony is a privilege and sacred appointment, and church members are called to active service because they belong to Christ who bought them with His precious blood. God needs people as His witnesses and is anxious for them to return to Him, for He knows they need Him and He needs them, and the calls and invitations of the Bible mean all that the strongest language can express, so that turning the face from the living God does serious wrong to oneself.

Every believer who has tasted the powers of the world to come and eaten the flesh and drunk the blood of the Son of God, who has responded to drawing love and fed on the Son of God, is appointed as witness by Christ Himself laying His hand upon them, even where no ministerial hands have been laid in ordination. Every child of God is His witness, with no slothful servants or drones in His household, for each son and daughter has a particular work assigned in the vineyard of the Lord. That appointment is a commission to deny self, lift the cross and carry Christ's burdens, go trade on the talents given, make personal efforts to lead souls to believe, and be the light of the world whose good works cause men to glorify the Father, while remaining antagonistic to the world in spirit, precept, and practice yet becoming a living channel of blessing to it. To be a witness is to learn in the school of Christ to pray and to bear living testimony, learning by practice how to pray, how to tell personal experience in meeting, and how to do better and more perfect work by putting powers into use, placing will and interests under the Great Teacher, seeking wisdom and strength from God and doing one's best rather than being indolent. The witness improves that wisdom by using it to benefit and bless others and glorify God, receiving from God and diffusing to fellow men, and so grows stronger up into Christ the living head, grows in power of mind to comprehend spiritual things, learns to devise ways and methods to help others, abiding in the vine bears much fruit in vital union with the Living Vine, and becomes rooted and grounded and established in the truth. Those who have received spiritual life bear witness simply by praying, speaking the truth they love, reading from Scripture, or recalling their experience, and the Holy Spirit gives that witness power to change hearts and lives.

This calling spans every age to devout people who received the light given to them and spoke God's words, exemplified by Enoch, Noah, Moses, and Daniel as ministers of righteousness who were not infallible but weak and erring, through whom God worked as they devoted themselves to His service. The young Hebrew captives in Babylon were to represent God among heathen nations and bring them the blessings of knowing Him while remaining faithful to their worship of the living God, revealing His character and the principles of His kingdom even among idolaters. Witnessing includes faithfulness in small daily duties as well as in great responsibilities, requiring no special or prominent task. Those who passed through the tests of faith including the disappointment of 1844 carry as witnesses the experience and knowledge given to establish their faith through the Holy Spirit, and are called to remain watchful and strengthen what is in danger of dying spiritually because of false theories and misapplied Scripture.

The witness calling applies to daily workplaces, where managers and workers in offices and publishing houses are to think, speak, and act as witnesses for Him in active daily work. In a publishing house the manager's life must adorn profession of the truth and testify to God through a kindly spirit and conduct consistent with the sacred work entrusted to him.

Open Bold Confession

The verse appoints God's people as His public witnesses and calls for open, courageous confession before the universe of heaven, before unfallen worlds, and before angels and men. No one can work out salvation or receive even the smallest spiritual blessing of the gospel by stealth, and nothing is effectually gained in advancing in the knowledge of God and of Jesus Christ while remaining hidden. The believing one, longing after Christian excellence of character, must take a decided stand, come out from the world and be separate, and openly acknowledge the truth. In doing so he becomes as God intends, a spectacle unto the world, to angels, and to men, a city set on a hill that cannot be hid.

Bearing testimony and offering prayer are acts of this witness that must glorify God by being spoken in a clear, distinct, audible voice so that hearers are edified, encouraged, and blessed. Public testimony and prayer are not to be given in low, indistinct, unintelligible murmurs or moaning with the face covered, for such quiet utterance belongs in private closet worship. God has given the gift of speech and voice to tell others what He has done, so that His love and compassion touch other hearts and praise rises from others whom He has called out of darkness into His marvelous light. Those called to witness must learn from Christ to become effective witnesses, and as children of the heavenly King must train themselves to give testimony willingly and without any suggestion of reluctance to tell of the mercies of the Lord. Faithful soldiers of the cross honor Him by cultivating speech and voice with persevering effort and Christlike assurance without fear or doubting, coming before Him boldly from personal experience, showing that truth enlightens, broadens, and strengthens the mind and gives solidity and power to every faculty, making worship interesting and beneficial and giving hearers a correct impression.

Witnesses must answer to their appointment by speaking His word and testimony with boldness in the time of test and trial, even under threatening and accusation, and not turn from the work given them. In times of trial they are to show their fellowship with Christ through faith, Christian fortitude, and freedom from murmuring or complaint, for their time to witness is short. Putting confidence in self leads to failure to witness, as Peter failed when he listened to Satan's suggestion and denied his Lord with cursing and swearing, but after conversion he stood forth as a bold witness for Christ, and the same turning from self-confidence to bold, faithful witnessing is required. Every follower enlisted in His service must be faithful and true in representing Jesus with His help as Helper, speaking openly when called upon, even in short words telling that Jesus is precious, that He helps and blesses every day in efforts to serve Him, and expressing thankfulness for the truth and light found in the Word of God. Such words give encouragement and example to brethren and sisters, while silence withholds that encouragement and can leave the impression of tiredness and discouragement in the Lord's service.

To be His witness means knowing individually that every promise of God is true and telling others so through faithful words and actions. It is confessing His faithfulness and grace from personal experience, making Christ known through the evidence of divine power at work in the life, with each person's distinct life and experience giving its praise its own character. Witnesses share with others the light, grace, and truth He has given them, communicating what they have received and looking to Jesus for spiritual knowledge not to hide it but to let it give light to all. They are appointed as the light of the world that cannot be hidden, and are expected to walk in the great light given them, to move under its direct influence, and to tell over and over, as Paul did, His miraculous leadings in the past, using the enlightenment of the prophets who spoke of this time. Their experience in the faith is to be communicated to those in darkness rather than hidden, their work is to magnify Christ and not themselves and to represent His character to the world, letting good works glorify the Father, and as they do this they become charged with fresh power direct from God. This witnessing requires willing consecration and obedience, fearless and intelligent proclamation of God's law, and bearing the third angel's message to every land and to people of every language, diffusing the light of truth to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people in obedience to the commission to teach all nations.

True witnesses represent Him in spirit and practice in this world of selfishness and darkness by using the entrusted talent of speech to the glory of God, prizing sound words and sound speech seasoned with grace, and bringing the Word of God into actual contact with souls for whom Christ died. Being His witnesses costs something, requiring coming into close relationship and fellowship with the Father and the Son, receiving rich blessings into the heart, representing the Redeemer in character by meekness and lowliness of heart, and not only preaching grace and love but acting grace and love, pressing toward perfection as the Father in heaven is perfect. Those who profess to be Christians while misrepresenting Christ, testifying by imperfect daily walk and loveless actions that they do not know Him, and acting as children of darkness and not of light, cannot receive this word from Him. Those who circulate reports to the injury of souls, speak perverse things that sow seeds bearing an evil harvest, gather chaff and pass by precious treasures of truth, and emulate the tattling wicked tongue are not such witnesses, nor are those who remain surface-ground or stony-ground hearers. True witnesses listen every day to the living oracles of God with purpose to give entrance to the word, doing the appropriate action belonging to each opportunity of life, for neglect brings guilt because God lives and reigns.

Christlike Life Testimony

To be His witnesses is to render pure, wholehearted obedience to His law rather than continuing in disobedience and transgression, for He manifests Himself in those who let Him and they become witnesses before heaven and before a world making His law void to the power of redemption. Sabbathkeepers bear this witness by standing in defense of His holy law even through trials and persecution, exposing moral darkness, with reward to those who overcome. That faithful practice of truth belongs in the home and when standing alone in keeping His commandments. Those entrusted with sacred light contradict their witness while remaining backslidden, unconsecrated and unholy in life and character, and must live the truth professed. It is an honor to be acknowledged as His children, shown by love for His law and delight in doing His will. Staying alert to the importance of the time and living faithfully, including rejecting improper familiarity between men and women, belongs to this witness.

Witnesses are transformed by looking to Christ and reveal that change through Christlike forbearance and love, receiving His light united to Him and responsible to let it shine in the world. Cheerful, lovable followers are His representatives reflecting Him in daily life, able to shine His light to others only while they remain in the light. Complete union with Christ feeds upon Him as the branch draws nourishment through the root from the parent stalk, receiving currents of spiritual strength so leaves never wither and tempest-like temptation cannot uproot, drawing motives of action from deep love for the Redeemer with true and holy affection, diffusing His light, but receding from the light leaves no bright beams to give. An indwelling Saviour produces the changed life by which they witness, with faith working through love, purifying the soul, and leading to do His will rather than their own. They witness to truth and righteousness by representing Christ in word, spirit and action especially when tested, seeking His fullness and growing toward perfection of His character. Faithful testimony and lives marked by unity and love show the truth and divine character of His Word.

Honoring Christ in daily life is confessing Him, through just dealings, humility and faithful performance of daily duties. This means watching with a devotional mind, keeping religion and Christ and honesty in all business so it bears heaven's seal, doing justice and judgment to every soul connected with the work, knowing the eye of the Infinite One is upon every word and spirit borne, repenting before God when another spirit is carried and a day is lost and the soul hurt, and spending every moment as though it might be the last in work for time and eternity with His help, in constant readiness for the Saviour's coming in the clouds at unknown day and hour. In a publishing house the manager's life must adorn profession of truth and testify through kindly spirit and conduct consistent with the sacred work entrusted. Conduct is to represent Him faithfully and act in His place, especially when integrity and loyalty are tested. Managers and workers in the office bear witness through what they think, say and do in daily work. That witness is active daily work to think, speak and act as witnesses for Him.

Those acknowledged as His witnesses are those whose life is hid with Christ in God because they not only hear but do His words, making manifest in character the inward operation of the Spirit with internal action demonstrated in outward conduct, giving evidence that divine power is influencing hearts and shaping conduct and convincing associates that they make Christ their pattern. Renewed and enlightened people who have received new life and health are to share what they have learned about depending on God and living temperately. Every believer is His witness to the unbelieving world by acting faith and testifying that the end of all things is at hand, with self not figuring largely in plans, while testing truth for this time stimulates the mind, purifies the soul, sanctifies desires, and is demonstrated in saving the perishing without Christ by doing His work in His way and Spirit. Converted and enlightened ones chosen to make known the One who gives renewed life and health are to share received knowledge and experience, testifying to His power and depending on Him as they work. Representing Christ in the world by precept and example as He represented the Father means giving clear testimony and carrying forward His work of relieving the needy, distressed and suffering, while tobacco confuses the mind and cannot combine with the Holy Spirit's stimulant, so tobacco and other pernicious habits unfit the mind to give clear testimony and waste means that should support it.

Believers as His witnesses and chosen servants are called to continual service by exercising God-given abilities in bearing testimony, with attending the Sabbath meeting itself being under service to the Master to do His work and act one's part, and entrusted talents to be earnestly improved and doubled by use. Following His teachings and pressing toward the light and perfection shown in His words and works belongs with walking the narrow way as His witnesses, with loving God supremely and neighbor as self. Being His witness requires constant exercise of ability, influence and means to do good, which strengthens and increases power to do, while hiding the talent and failing to improve it proves unprofitable and slothful, complaining against God, unfit for faithfulness in the future life and facing retributive judgment for neglecting the good made possible. Those who believe in Christ and act belief reach for more perfect character, firmer faith and clearer experience, showing completeness and consistency in contrast to the world, with earnest striving seen in secret prayerful petitions for Christ's grace to whom the Spirit comes as Comforter and Teacher, and when they make highest demands upon God to glorify Him by fruitfulness, press onward, stay one with Christ and give mutual support, the heavenly Watcher reports it as laboring together with God. He needs them as witnesses and is anxious for their return, knowing they need Him, with Bible calls and invitations meaning all the strongest language can express, and turning from the living God does serious wrong to oneself. Openly confessing Christ and acknowledging His claims, instead of neglecting prayer and duty, shunning the cross-bearing life or being governed by worldly principles, is required even when discouraged and light has flickered, by full and complete surrender without delay trusting in Christ's merits alone for hope of heaven and openly avowing truth with all its inconveniences as His property by creation and redemption at infinite cost.

Fathers and mothers are called to make their lives a living testimony before neighbors and children, changing course for their own souls and their children's sake, keeping all His commandments, turning to Him in obedience with prayer and watchfulness, refusing to walk in darkness, to live as neighbors choose or to please them, to hide conscience-convincing light of truth, or to let the world absorb the mind and sacrifice heaven for worldly gain. Turning to Him by obedience, prayer and watching unto prayer, repenting and doing the first works, refusing neighbors' ways or sophistry, choosing what conscience knows is true, refusing worldly absorption of mind, and counting eternal life worth more than gaining the whole world is required both for one's own soul and for children in a time of adulterated Christianity. Courtesy and kindness taught and practiced in the home can bear witness for truth and glorify Him. Choices and conduct should testify to faith and influence others toward heaven and affect His kingdom's interests, while departure from His requirements harms those looking for guidance. Practicing truth in the home gives the family testimony of living as Christians loving God and Jesus.

Worldwide Mission to End

Ye are my witnesses means chosen representatives charged to carry the entrusted message of truth and solemn warning throughout the world, to nations, languages, tongues, kindreds, peoples, cities and countries still waiting to hear it. That worldwide bearing aloft of the banner amid moral darkness includes proclaiming the binding claims of the fourth commandment and the law of God fearlessly and intelligently, bearing the third angel's message to every land, and diffusing the light of truth to every nation in obedience to the commission to teach all nations. Publishing houses themselves are to serve as such witnesses and teachers of righteousness, sending that message like light into the world's darkness. Being His witnesses in this sense means knowing and believing Him and making Him known, carrying liberation and salvation to people in darkness both nearby and in foreign lands so that the work displays genuine faith, with willing consecration and obedience and with individual certainty that every promise of God is true told to others in straightforward testimony of word and work.

That mission is to save the lost in spiritual darkness, with lives and good works pointing others to God and bringing Him glory. As Christ's representatives and agencies formed for the salvation of souls to show forth His praise, witnesses urge people to become reconciled to God, serving with the cooperation of heavenly agencies and the Holy Spirit and with the sympathy of the heavenly universe when filled with desire to win sinners to Christ. Their faithful testimony calls people to repentance by making danger clear, points them to Christ who takes away the world's sin, carries His mercy and righteousness to the lost, and invites the thirsty to receive the water of life, with power to break hardened hearts and expose falsehood even where people resent the testimony as they resented the Son of God. God empowers this carrying of saving truth through the world, giving His servants opportunities as they exercise living faith and labor with Him to bring others to Him.

The verse belongs to a prophecy to be fulfilled in the last days, when God's law is made void and His people are robbed and oppressed. Then believers are called to be His witnesses against darkness, infidelity, the papacy, and low views of inspiration that exalt human wisdom above the Word of God. To witness is to cease dark and gloomy speech, to exalt Jesus with the voice, to magnify and adore the Word of God and show its validity and divine character purely, boldly, faithfully and uncompromisingly, to make the gospel known by consistent, holy and pure lives as hearers and doers of the Word, and to show unity and love among believers so the world is impressed that the Word is true. This requires humbling the soul before God in meekness and receiving power from on high through the Holy Spirit, so that mercy and the love of God appear triumphant and the glory of the Lord shines through believers, upholding that the gospel cannot be overcome and that God preserves it from being weakened by human inventions.

God does His teaching and saving work through human agencies rather than teaching every person directly by the Holy Spirit, whose office work is to qualify men and women to become teachers whom God sends to instruct and educate others and to preach the gospel to the world. This witnessing work of teaching, caring for the sick, and extending the knowledge of the gospel continues until a people stand without spot and blameless, prepared for the great day of the Lord. Those converted from error to truth bear sacred responsibility to lift the standard for Jesus wherever they are, and God permits trials in temporal things that uproot His people from their homes and send them into new places so they may let their light shine to others in moral darkness who must be warned and bring the truth to good and honest hearts who will receive it. Faithfully carrying on Christ's work means proclaiming the message of life, reflecting His light, and growing in His spirit and power while seeking the salvation of those around, and baptism begins this work rather than completing it.

Those who seek Christ and receive the Holy Spirit are given power to witness for Him. Those who have received spiritual life from Christ are appointed by Him as His witnesses whether or not they have been ordained by human hands. They bear witness simply by praying, speaking the truth they love, reading from Scripture, or recalling their experience, and the Holy Spirit gives their witness power to change hearts and lives. Such witness is a gift of divine help and an expression of God's care for those who seek His guidance.
