Isaiah 43:11

I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour.

The verse declares that the Lord alone is God and Savior, and beside Him there is no other god, savior, power, or source of salvation that can save or deliver. The speaker is Jesus Christ Himself as the eternal I AM, expressing His own eternal presence and divine identity as Lord, God, Holy One, Creator, King, and only Savior. In its setting He is the Holy One of Israel who created and formed His people for His glory, redeemed them, called them by name, forgives and blots out their transgressions, and gives righteousness and strength, with no God before or after Him. It calls all people to the ends of the earth to look to the Lord and to Jesus for salvation, trusting in Him rather than in finite persons, human wisdom, or human strength. Salvation and life are brought to light only by the gospel, the truth as it is in Jesus, and those redeemed stand as His witnesses by pure whole-hearted obedience, letting their light shine before heaven and earth.

Meaning in Its Setting

I, even I, am the LORD, and beside me there is no saviour, declares that the Lord alone is God and Saviour, and that there is no other god, no other saviour, no other power, and no other source of salvation that can save or deliver. His saving acts and declarations establish His people as His witnesses that He is God. He has declared and accomplished salvation, and no other god can save or deliver. The verse belongs to a call for the nations to hear God's witnesses, and it supports the work of appointed messengers who warn and awaken people with a testing message.

In its setting the LORD is the Holy One of Israel, who created Jacob and formed Israel, redeemed them, called them by name, and claims them as His own, creating and making them for His glory. There is no God formed before Him nor after Him, and there is no strange god among His people. His servants whom He has chosen are to know and believe Him and understand that He is He, and therefore they are His witnesses. By declaring and saving and showing His work, with none able to deliver out of His hand or hinder it, He establishes His chosen servants as witnesses who are to know and believe and understand that He is He.

The speaker is Jesus Christ Himself as the eternal I AM. I AM means eternal presence, with past, present, and future alike before Him, the great name given to Moses which Christ used to express His own eternal presence. Isaiah saw Christ, so the words spoken through Isaiah are Christ speaking of Himself as Lord, God, Holy One, Creator, and King, and as the only Saviour who declares, saves, and shows His work with none able to deliver out of His hand or hinder it. In this declaration the Lord speaking through Isaiah after Isaiah has seen Christ links Christ with the divine identity and the work of salvation.

The surrounding teaching affirms that He redeems His people, forgives their sins, blots out transgressions as a thick cloud, redeems Jacob, justifies all the seed of Israel, gives righteousness and strength, and glorifies Himself in Israel. All the ends of the earth must look unto Him and be saved, for in Him alone are righteousness and strength. This agrees with Isaiah 45, which calls God both just and Saviour and invites all the earth to look to Him for salvation. The verse belongs to a chapter full of promises and assurance, and God's purpose for His people revealed in Isaiah 41 to 45 should be prayerfully studied, encouraging believers in the latter days to trust that the Lord will fulfill what He has promised.

Trusting and Witnessing Salvation

The call of the verse is for all people and all the ends of the earth to look to the Lord and to Jesus for salvation and spiritual knowledge, trusting in Him rather than turning away to finite people, finite man, human wisdom, or human strength. In Him alone are righteousness and strength, for He has redeemed Jacob, blotted out transgressions as a thick cloud, justified all the seed of Israel, forgiven sins, and glorified Himself in Israel. His purpose for His people revealed in Isaiah 41 to 45 should be prayerfully studied.

He manifests tender compassion to the contrite, love to the believing trusting soul, and pity and compassion over all His creatures, showing Himself strong in behalf of those who fear Him. He is moved toward His people when exposed to the temptations of a relentless foe and unable in their own strength to meet him, is touched with the feeling of their infirmities, bears them up all the days of their lives, and has power to help in every extremity. The humble and contrite learn that God alone is Savior through personal experience.

If His people are obedient to His commandments which point out the safe and right way and comply with the conditions of salvation, they show love for Christ, keep close to His side where the wicked one touches them not and cannot pluck them out of the Savior's hands, and do not fall prey to Satan's temptations. Jesus then gives clear evidence of His continual presence and unfailing love, assures that the promises of God are yea and Amen in Him, and is a very present help in trouble, so with Christ by the side of the tried and tempted there is no failure, loss, impossibility, or defeat, for all things can be done through Him who strengthens. He lives and His followers shall live also, and He opens the way for those who serve Him fully and seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, sustaining livelihood without distrust, having given His own life to bring rich blessings to all who believe.

Distrust loses precious revealings of His Spirit, changes the mission, fails to walk in opening providences, makes it impossible for God to multiply blessing and grace, misinterprets providences and dishonors His name, while homage and service rendered in perfect faith and love are rewarded by the richest revealing of His grace, for His ways are all justice, mercy, and love. The humble and contrite learn this through personal experience as they serve those who do not know the truth.

Witnessing for God means rendering pure, whole-hearted obedience to God's law rather than continuing in disobedience and transgression. When His people let Him, He manifests Himself in them, and they stand as witnesses before the universe of heaven and before an apostate world that is making void the law of God, to the power of redemption. They are not to hide the light under a bushel but to let it give light to all who are in the house, for God has given His Son for a light of the Gentiles to open blind eyes and to bring prisoners out of prison and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.

Salvation and life are brought to light only by the gospel, the truth as it is in Jesus, who alone is Savior with salvation in no other. The verse belongs to prophecies about God's people being robbed with no deliverer that will be fulfilled, prophecies still to be fulfilled in the last days when God's law is made void. Past history will be repeated in a determined conflict in the Christian world over the commandments of the living God, where those disloyal to God's law war against those who follow the Lamb and present God's commandments while human laws are exalted to cover transgression, becoming inhuman toward fellow men, and if the professed Christian world fails to learn from the Jews' rejection and condemnation of Christ, they will repeat it and make themselves responsible for the death of Christ in the person of His saints.
