Isaiah 43:24

Thou hast bought me no sweet cane with money, neither hast thou filled me with the fat of thy sacrifices: but thou hast made me to serve with thy sins, thou hast wearied me with thine iniquities.

Israel dishonored God by withholding what was due Him, buying Him no sweet cane with money and not filling Him with the fat of sacrifices, while instead making Him to serve with sins and wearying Him with iniquities. He had not burdened them with offerings nor wearied them with incense, yet their sins and iniquities burdened and wearied Him.

The verse stands in Isaiah 41 through 45, a section that fully reveals God's purpose for His people. Those chapters should be studied prayerfully. The verse is part of the Lord's call for His people to repent, showing that their iniquities burden and weary Him. The Lord is not to be trifled with.

Even so, God promises to blot out transgressions for His own sake as a thick cloud and to remember sins no more. His servants will not be forgotten, for He has redeemed them and calls them to return to Him. They are to look to Him and be saved to the ends of the earth, for there is no other God. Righteousness and strength, justification and glory, are in the Lord alone. The section directs God's people to seek wisdom from Him and not to turn away from Him to finite human beings for wisdom.

The verse is among prophecies to be fulfilled in the last days, when God's law is made void and His people are robbed and left without deliverance. Its picture also applies to people who presume to dictate to others and to rule them harshly as though with a rod of iron. When a teacher or missionary loses sight of Christ as the pattern and lets selfishness, prejudice, vain thoughts and jealousies enter the heart, speaking words and doing actions unbecoming a child of God, he makes the Lord to serve with his sins. The Lord must not be made so to serve, but all prejudice and selfishness must die and all vain thoughts and jealousies must become extinct through an indwelling Saviour, which requires genuine conversion of heart and transformation of character.
