Isaiah 43:26

Put me in remembrance: let us plead together: declare thou, that thou mayest be justified.

God invites His people and sinners to remind Him of His promise and His words, to plead and reason their case together with Him, and to set forth their cause so that they may be justified and shown to be in the right. This invitation stands joined to His promise to blot out transgressions for His own sake and to remember sins no more. Forgiveness, full acceptance and justification are freely given as gifts of His mercy through the merits of Jesus, the crucified and risen Lord, and are received by trusting Him, so that no soul that trusts in Jesus will be left to perish. In its setting the call belongs to a revelation of His purpose for His people that turns them from finite human wisdom to the wisdom of the Infinite at their command, declaring Israel His servant whom He will not forget, whom He has redeemed and blotted out as a thick cloud, and that in the Lord alone are righteousness and strength and salvation, for there is no God else beside Him. It is to be answered by trusting in the Lord, being comforted in His love and praising Him because His anger is turned away, and by earnest, humble prayer that wrestles with God and presents His promises before the throne of grace for the endowment of His Holy Spirit.

Context and Assurance

In its setting the verse belongs to a revelation of God's purpose for His people that turns them to the wisdom of the Infinite at their command rather than to finite human wisdom. Around it God declares Israel His servant whom He will not forget, that He has blotted out transgressions as a thick cloud for His own sake and will remember sins no more, that He has redeemed Jacob and calls for return to Him. Salvation is by looking unto Him, for there is no God else beside Him, and in the Lord alone are righteousness and strength, and all the seed of Israel shall be justified and shall glory.

The chapter is full of assurance and promises that are sure to be fulfilled, and those who follow them place themselves where the Lord will do all He has promised. It is to be studied prayerfully.

The prophecy that includes the verse, describing God's people as robbed and trapped in holes and held captive in prison houses, is fulfilled. The verse is part of prophecies to be fulfilled in the last days, when God's law is made void and He manifests great grace to His chosen people.

Invitation to Be Justified

God invites His people and sinners to put Him in remembrance by reminding Him of His promise and His words, to plead and reason their case together with Him, and to declare it so that they may be justified and shown to be in the right. This call to bring the case before Him and to speak it out is for the sinner to remember His promise to blot out transgressions. The invitation stands joined to His promise to blot out transgressions for His own sake and to remember sins no more.

Forgiveness and full acceptance are freely given through the merits of Jesus, the crucified and risen Lord. Forgiveness and justification are gifts of God's mercy, received by trusting Him. No soul that trusts in Jesus will be left to perish.

As a call of God's mercy, the invitation is to be answered by trusting in the Lord, being comforted in His love, and praising Him because His anger is turned away.

Prayer and Faithful Living

The verse is a call to earnest, humble prayer and determined wrestling with God for the endowment of His Holy Spirit. It means taking the Bible and presenting God's promises before the throne of grace, reminding Him of what He has said and pleading together with Him. This pleading prayer is given in order to meet responsibility and to make proper use of presented opportunities.

Against the spirit of the many who feel competent to order and to dictate and to rule others as with a rod of iron, the verse calls to hide self in Jesus. It calls to have a deep and living experience in the things of God, to walk humbly with God as Enoch walked with God, and to have individuality in Jesus Christ. It calls to trust the Lord as sun and shield, to keep communication open between God and the soul, and to praise Him. The verse calls people to bring their case before God and plead with Him, recalling His words and declaring their case so that they may be shown to be in the right. The chapter that contains it is among the Scriptures that students and teachers are urged to read and examine for the lessons God gives. That chapter describes the work of one who is a partaker of the divine nature and stands in holy trust as God's steward. It is the work of using entrusted faculties faithfully to reach the highest point of excellence, guarding every avenue of the soul lest Satan remove the fortifications. It is the work of keeping the mind free from rubbish and open to the bright beams of the Sun of Righteousness, bringing the mind into harmony with the mind of God, and cultivating the intellect and disciplining the character until he can see God. It is the work of presenting his portion of God's vineyard well-cultivated and beautiful by faithfully planting and sowing and ever extending into new lands without defeat or failure.
