Isaiah 43:5

Fear not: for I am with thee: I will bring thy seed from the east, and gather thee from the west;

Fear is taken away because God Himself is with His people, and His abiding presence gives peace to troubled hearts. He will recover and gather His dispersed descendants and remnant from across the earth, bringing sons and daughters from the east and the west and the north and the south, even from the far ends of the earth, as those called by His name and created for His glory. The One who speaks is Jesus Christ as the eternal I AM, the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, Saviour, Creator and King, the prophesied child called the mighty God and everlasting Father, beside whom there is no Saviour and whose work none can hinder. The removal of fear and the return from afar rest on everlasting love that draws with loving-kindness, and on everlasting kindness that shows mercy and care and forgiveness even after momentary displeasure, so the guilty heart can rest in peace. It is prophecy about God's chosen people to be fulfilled in the last days when He shows grace to His people while His law is made void, given as assurance and promises to encourage believers and to be trusted as a work He will fully perform for those who fulfill its conditions. As Christ's own word it is to be spoken to comfort people in distress, to one trembling with fear on the brink of the grave and to the soul weary of suffering and sin, assuring that He is present, hears appeals for help, and helps the helpless.

Presence and Gathering Promised

Fear is forbidden because God Himself is with His people, and that abiding presence itself removes fear and gives peace to troubled hearts. In distress His word assures His children that they need not be afraid, for He is present, He hears appeals for help, and He helps the helpless. The reason given for courage is therefore not circumstance but companionship, so that hearts burdened by suffering and sin can rest without fear.

The promise to bring seed from the east and gather from the west is a promise to recover and gather dispersed descendants and the remnant from across the earth. That gathering reaches to sons and daughters from the east and the west and the north and the south and the far ends of the earth, as those called by His name and created for His glory. It is comfort for His people that their scattering will be reversed by His own act of bringing them back to Himself.

The One who speaks is Jesus Christ through Isaiah as the eternal I AM, which means eternal presence with past and present and future alike clear before Him. He speaks as the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, Saviour, Creator and King, the same of whom Isaiah prophesied as the child to be called the mighty God and everlasting Father. Beside Him there is no Saviour, and He alone declares and saves and shows His work, which none can hinder. The removal of fear and the return from afar rest on everlasting love that draws with loving-kindness and on everlasting kindness that shows mercy and care and forgiveness even after displeasure for a moment, so that the guilty and troubled heart need not fear but can rest in peace.

Prophecy Studied and Lived

The verse belongs to prophecy concerning God's chosen people that will be fulfilled in the last days, when God shows grace to His people while His law is made void. It promises that God will be with His people and will gather them from the east and the west. This promise belongs to those prophecies of the chapter that are to be fulfilled at that time.

Its chapter is one of assurance and promises meant to encourage believers in the latter days. It plainly foretells the work of presenting the warning message to the world. Those who fulfill its conditions can trust that the Lord will do all He has promised and will fully perform it.

Standing within Isaiah 41-45, where God very fully reveals His purpose for His people, the verse and its context should be prayerfully studied. They direct God's people to seek wisdom from Him rather than from finite human beings. God's people are not to turn away from His wisdom and look to finite man for wisdom, but to trust the wisdom of the Infinite at their command, with assurance that He is with them and will gather their scattered descendants from east and west.

As Christ's own word, it is to be spoken to comfort people in distress. It is to be spoken to one trembling with fear on the brink of the grave and to the soul weary of the burden of suffering and sin, giving assurance of His abiding presence that takes away fear. In distress, Jesus' words give that assurance: He is present, hears appeals for help, and helps the helpless. Troubled hearts can have peace and need not be afraid, and the guilty heart can rest in peace, since God removes fear by His own presence and by bringing them back to Himself from afar.

The chapter describes the work of a faithful steward who guards every avenue of the soul. He keeps the mind free from the rubbish Satan would pile into it and lays it open to the bright beams of the Sun of Righteousness so he can see God. He cultivates the intellect and disciplines the character. He faithfully plants and sows to present his portion of God's vineyard well-cultivated and beautiful while ever extending his domains by working new lands.
